Visited Free House yesterday with a large, diverse group of friends, including a friend with their dog, and sat at the outdoor patio tables while our group got settled before ordering. Before we had even had a chance to go inside and order, a bartender came outside and approached us in an immediately confrontational manner. His opening line was “I’m not trying to police you” a phrase that, directed at a group that was majority people of color. He then told us we couldn’t be seated without ordering and that he couldn’t have us “doing whatever the hell this is” gesturing at our group. We had every intention of ordering. We were settling in. The hostility was unprovoked and the language was dehumanizing. There was no version of this interaction that needed to go the way it did. This felt unwelcoming, othering, and inappropriate. Staff should be trained to communicate policies to customers. ESPECIALLY large groups who represent real business without aggression or dismissive language. We ordered a few rounds of drinks and food but left shortly after. I’d encourage the owner to review ORS 659A.403 ahead of any pending state reviews. I love a bar that feels welcoming—there’s no feeling of being new or out of place. It doesn’t matter if it’s been a month or six, Free House is so welcoming and hospitable that you’re at home immediately. Love the food, love the mix of classic cocktails, original, and riffs on favorites. If they’re not too busy, they’re always down to chat and help you figure out what you want. I’ve made acquaintances sitting at the bar too and also had a cozy corner to read and sip. Quality and friendly! Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
