We were in line waiting to be rang up and a Black couple came behind us to wait to get their items checked out. It came to our knowledge the line was closed, and the Cashier Bil (William on the receipt) was only going to be helping us from that point forward. Mind you, this is AFTER they got in line. He proceeds to put the responsibility on us to reject them service due to them being so far away from his station.
I took a few moments to process the situation, and I had advised the couple of what was happening. Following suite, I proclaimed to Bil that it was “Not my job to tell them they can’t be helped”. Bil became frustrated at this point. He began to yell saying, “If I wasn’t comfortable saying so, I should have said something”! He then proceeded to tell them to go to another lane.
As we arrive to the check out counter, my boyfriend begins conversing with Bil and begins trying to coach him on how to handle his customers more professionally because we were both very upset being put in such an awkward situation. He continues to put the blame on us when my boyfriend tried to tell him that if a store associate had handled the situation of closing the line it would have avoided the entire issue. During this conversation, Bil begins to throw his groceries into bags with out care due to his emotions getting the best of him and finishes check out.
After leaving the line, Bil decided to leave his register and watch his actions. He became very defensive, and upon request for a manger, he became verbally hostile and aggressive and got in my boyfriends face while trying to speak with the Manager on Duty. My boyfriend had to repeatedly tell him to get away from him while the manager, other associates, and security stood by as bystanders. The manager’s only response was “I’m sorry, and you can call corporate to file a complaint.”
During times of social injustice and the Black Lives Matter movement, I believe it is imperative for a company to train their employees on empathy and escalated situations. Today could have gone a negative way for all parties involved, and I continue to feel such empathy for the black couple that Bil decided to humiliate today. No one should ever be put in a potentially hostile situation as a patron is an establishment because in employee doesn’t feel like doing his job or isn’t comfortable with what is required of him. Frys this needs to be corrected!
