A charming French restaurant with occasional modern twists. I’ve been here a few times and had a great experience each time. The service is excellent (shout out to Mora), and the atmosphere is cozy and intimate. Most of the dishes were very good, though a few weren’t quite to my personal taste, and some were just less impressive overall. Standout dishes included the ratatouille, onion soup, duck, and the opera cake. The less memorable ones were the salmon, gnocchi and the leeks. I also usually order one of their two mocktails, but it at this point I wish they added new ones. Overall, I highly recommend this place. I decided on a whim to treat myself while on a solo work trip to Chicago and Gavroche was worth every penny! The decor and atmosphere are lovely and the service is top notch. I was greeted by name and had lovely conversations with the owner and the bartender Gina. Sometimes as a solo diner, I feel rushed or like an inconvenience — not the case here. Gina made some excellent recommendations, but also let me sit with my book between courses. Her timing was impeccable. Whenever I felt like I was ready for the next thing, she appeared. The food was AMAZING. They were generous with the fresh baguette for the escargot and I was googling how to make melted leeks after one bite of my salmon entree. I’m sure my version won’t compare, but it will make me remember the meal I had fondly. At the end of the night, I slipped off to freshen up before dessert and Gina made me an espresso martini as a nightcap, free of charge. I was truly touched by the gesture. As a relatively new mom, I rarely have time to myself and to be treated so warmly made my entire trip. Spend a few hours here — you won’t regret it!
