The owner was very friendly. The food excellent. The ambiance gives off a homey feel that is cozy and conducive for conversations. My family enjoyed the whole experience and we tried nearly everything. The horse sashimi was better than I expected... I really have reservations at first but I shouldn't have because it was very nice... Again this would be based on personal preference but I would take it again. The stew was also very nice. After a lengthy rain, the food just hits the right spot! Highly recommended!!! Price per person: ¥2,000–3,000

What an absolute Gem! The owners are some of the kindest most welcoming people I’ve met— it truly made Kumamoto feel like a home away from home. The basashi (horse sashimi) was so fresh and sweet and light, no gameyness at all. They served it with onion, garlic, ginger and shoyu. Perfect introduction to Kumamoto cuisine. I also got the butaguchi roast (pork shoulder) and that was SO perfectly seasoned and cooked, and served with a Brazil sauce (like pico de gallo, tomato and onion salsa). Heavenly. Paired with the service dish of delicious spaghetti bolognese and some peanuts and crackers, the Mt Aso Sake was incredible as well. So incredibly grateful to be recommended this place. Arigato gozaimasu from America! Price per person: ¥4,000–5,000 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

We are so lucky to have found this place during our only night in Kumamoto (and it was super close to our hotel too). If you are looking for a family-run, authentic experience without the crazy crowds, this is the spot. Despite the language barrier, the menu is in English, and the owner knew the basic phrases in English. We were able to taste the famous horse sashimi (basashi) and went with the recommended dishes from the owner/chef. The meat was fresh and very tender! Definitely give it a try since this is what Kumamoto is known for. Before departing, the owner gave us a souvenir to take home - what a beautiful memory that we would always cherish!
