Si podeis elegir, no entreis, la comida es de infima calidad, pero lo peor es el servicio, antes de sentarte ya te indican que les corre prisa que pagues. Si entrais, cuidado con la cuenta, cobran un 12,5% de servicio y te solicitan la propina. La cuenta no te la enseñan, viene tapada por otro papel, por lo que no la puedes revisar. En resumen, un sitio horrible... Food: 1 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 1 Meal type: Dinner Price per person: £20–30

En pleno Chinatown; tenía hambre y me dio por entrar a cenar, sin mirar las reseñas… ojalá lo hubiera hecho. No hay por donde cogerlo: cutre, camareros antipáticos y comida de escasísima calidad; además, hacen juegos malabares con los precios. Pedí un plato de pato cantonés, que venía acompañado por un plato de arroz con huevo, y una coca cola. El pato estaba horrible, frío, sin sabor, la piel totalmente fláccida; el arroz estaba bastante mejor. El precio en carta era de 18 libras, y la coca cola no la miré, pero tirando por la alto pueden ser 4 o 5 libras. Cuando me traen la cuenta, viene doblada, de tal manera que solo veo el total: 31,50 libras (36,50 €). Pago y se llevan el dinero y la cuenta sin dejarme que compruebe nada. Para colmo, cuando pago con datáfono, ya viene preparado con varias opciones para que les deje propina (por supuesto, no les dejé ni un penique). Lo comentado, lamentable; lo mejor es evitar este sitio, creo que difícilmente los habrá peores. Eso sí, la carta es gigante; realmente, son dos cartas, con un montón de páginas cada una de ellas. GOOGLE REVIEW – GERRARD'S CORNER (1/5 stars) Disappointing Experience – Misleading Service Charge Practices I visited Gerrard's Corner with my family on 1st January 2026, and while I've been to many restaurants in Chinatown over the years, this experience left me genuinely disappointed, not because of the food, but because of how the staff handled a simple service charge query. When our bill arrived (£161.50 total), I noticed a 12.5% service charge had been automatically added (£17.90). I politely asked if this could be removed, as is standard practice in UK restaurants when a customer is unhappy with the service or simply chooses not to pay it. What happened next was quite eye-opening. The staff member told me, in no uncertain terms, that I was **legally required** to pay the service charge because it was mentioned at the bottom of the menu. They insisted that I had "no choice" and that payment was mandatory, regardless of my concerns. When I explained that service charges in the UK are discretionary and that I'm within my rights to decline them, I was told I could "lodge a complaint" but that I still had to pay immediately. Here's the thing that troubles me most: **this is simply not true**. Service charges in the UK are discretionary by law. Yes, restaurants can mention them on menus (as Gerrard's Corner does in small print at the bottom), but telling customers they're legally obligated to pay them is misleading. The whole point of a service charge is to reward good service, if a customer is dissatisfied, they should be able to decline it or at least have a conversation about it. I'm not someone who typically refuses service charges. In fact, I usually tip well when service is good. But I believe in the principle that customers should understand their rights, and businesses shouldn't misrepresent legal obligations to customers. The dismissive attitude – "You have to pay, end of discussion" – was particularly frustrating. **What I would have liked to see:** - A polite conversation about my concerns - Perhaps asking if there was an issue with the service they could address - An acknowledgment that while the charge is disclosed on the menu, they could discuss it - Basic customer service training on how to handle these situations professionally **For other diners to know:** - The menu does state at the bottom (in yellow text): "12.5% Service Charge will be added to your final bill" - However, you are NOT legally required to pay it, regardless of what staff may tell you - Service charges are discretionary in the UK, you can refuse them, especially if service was poor - If you're told otherwise, you're within your rights to challenge this I genuinely hope the management at Gerrard's Corner takes this feedback seriously. Train your staff properly on UK consumer rights. Treat customers with respect when they raise concerns. And please, don't mislead people about their legal obligations, it damages trust and your reputation. I won't be returning, which is a shame because Chinatown has so many fantastic alternatives where customer concerns are actually listened to rather than dismissed. **Update:** I've filed formal complaints with both the restaurant and Westminster Trading Standards regarding these practices, as I believe other customers should be protected from this kind of misinformation.
