Walking through my local, neighborhood Schnucks recently I noticed a brand of tortilla chips and salsa called Hacienda. Being an adventurous chip and salsa lover, I impulse bought the pair. It wasn't until I was snacking on my couch while catching up on some Netflix did I realize that Hacienda was a brand born from the midwest soil on which I call home. As chance would have it, a friend texted me shortly after asking if I wanted to get dinner at none other than Hacienda Mexican Restaurant. The stars aligned, I closed up my jar of tasty salsa and headed to dinner. (Don't judge me, I love pregaming for dinner with snacks.) My initial reaction to this Rock Hill locale was that Hacienda Mexican Restaurant is not just a restaurant, it's a compound. The footprint of the building was MASSIVE. From the sweeping parking lot to the wrap around patio to the various seating sections that seemingly go on endlessly, you feel like you're in a labyrinth. As it turns out that's because it's the historic mansion! This was one of the first dine-in experiences my friends Johnny and Maleah and I ventured out to enjoy. We definitely felt safe as the tables were well spaced, workers were wearing masks and there seemed to be a fair amount of sanitization happening. To start we got some cadillac margaritas to pair with our chips and salsa (which were even better than the ones I bought from Schnucks!) They were a bit watery and could have used another shot of tequila. I'm still a sucker for margs, so I got another when my watery one was done. I suggest just going with a house margarita since there really wasn't much of a difference besides price. As for the food... I will kinda first lump everything together. The food at Hacienda is a very homogenized American take on Mexican food. The flavors were fairly bland and blended together into a somewhat sad fiesta in my belly. The bowl my boyfriend got was a bunch of stuff slopped haphazardly together. The presentation wasn't anything that was thought of before the meal left the kitchen. My meal was the Wet Burrito, an oversized flour tortilla stuffed with your choice of protein and refried beans, covered in homemade enchilada sauce, melted Jack & cheddar, lettuce, tomato, onions, olives, jalapeños, guacamole and sour cream. So basically everything in the kitchen melted together on a plate. It was fine. It was just hard to enjoy any one flavor in the meal because it was just a pile of food on a plate that Americans consider Mexican cuisine. Overall, I was a bit bummed that the meal wasn't a more authentic Mexican experience. The best way to categorize the food at Hacienda is Suburbian Mass Produced Dinners.

Jason, thank you for such a thoughtful review and for sharing your experience. I understand you're looking for more "traditional" menu items, although the more Americanized dishes are usually the most popular we do offer traditional dishes and additional specials in the fall and winter as well. All our menu is made from scratch, our meats are hand butchered and cheeses shredded daily in house. Especially with our newly updated menu there's quite a variety to choose from. I would love to guide you to some items you might prefer for your next visit if you'd like to email me. My email is alex.rodriguez@haciendas…  We look forward to serving you again soon!
