As a Korean American, my husband and I have been to quite a few Korean and Korean American places. For the quality and price point, I thought Hanjan (or “one shot” in Korean) was a great take on Korean BBQ. We got there at 5pm on a Friday and were quickly seated. The prices are affordable as usually a serving of the best cut of pork belly in Chicagoland is around $22 a serving. Additionally, the banchans (side dishes) and saam (lettuce wrap and soybean paste) was the perfect amount for the evening. I think the standout dish of the night was the Nakji Gopchang, which is stir-fried octopus and beef tripe. It might sound like a strange concoction, but the nuttiness and fatty flavors from the tripe really round out the sweet and spicy dish well. I asked for a bowl of rice to mix with the sauce as I knew it would hit. And boy, did it !! Lastly, I would probably pass on the kimchi jigae as it wasn’t super fermented, but I’ll get my fix in Seoul in two weeks. All in all, a solid take on Korean barbecue that filled our stomachs! Price per person: ¥2,000–3,000 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
