In the past, we have chosen to eat Sushi E seated at Hemmesphere due to its live music and cosy chairs for that more intimate and relaxed dining experience. However, it has been awhile since we have been back, and we had high expectations and fond memories of the place coming in.
Upon entering the space, the room smelt heavily of smoke and cigars; particularly delicate food like Japanese. Due to the heavy scent, and the waitstaff seating us near the outdoor area, we had to ask a different waiter if we could move, as the host who greeted us and took us to the table, never came back to take our order.
From the original seating to our new seated table, we were waiting so long, just to have our drinks order taken. When we finally ordered the bottle of wine, we then waited very long just to receive it. Generally we are not impatient guests, but the wait time on this occasion was ridiculous. To add to that, no food menus were brought out to us, until we asked for it. The service was not professional at all. It seemed they don't make eye contact with the female partner, and make most eye contact with the male counterpart. From the moment entered and a host came to us, she only made the effort to acknowledge my partner, which I found odd, this also seemed to be a preference made by a few of the other waitstaff (not all).
Whilst the food was good, it was not worth the price paid. Upon paying the bill, there was no mention of the waitstaff/service fee add-on. So despite the very bad service, guests are also charged a service fee without their knowledge until the bill arrives. The service fee was just under $50. Whilst we would normally be happy to pay or leave a tip to our waitstaff, this was just unwarranted as we didn't have a consistent waiter who we felt provided good service. Rather it was the complete opposite, all in all it was the worst dining experience ever. You could get better service at a casual eatery. Regarding this service fee, we were too disappointed by the experience to raise it. The waitstaff also looked as if she was not fit for work. Regardless we paid what they charged us with and left. The abhorrent experience was enough for us to just want to leave. Some of the waitstaff also seemed to not act professionally, which made the dining experience more uncomfortable. It is difficult to swallow food when you are in shock about the professionalism.
For a meal for two that cost close to $500, for the atmosphere and what has become of the place, we will not return nor recommend it. In the past times, we have never had a disappointing experience. If you're going to charge premium prices for food, guests would expect a much better server experience one that is clean, timely and professional where the waitstaff look like they work there and are dressed for work. A disgusting experience. One star is not an accurate representation of the experience.
