I can’t thank you enough for allowing me to celebrate my 60th Birthday on such short notice, after our function was cancelled 15 min prior to my guests arriving by management at Basq in Essendon Fields. Seafood Pescatore Margherita Pizza Fettucine Carbonara Calamari You can’t miss Portobello Ristorante and it’s prominent place and large, bright neon lights on Mount Alexander Rd. A well known family owned and run business that aims to serve authentic Sicilian cooking with a contemporary Italian Style. The venue is stunning, sexy and moody, giving Art Deco wine bar vibes and matching trendy music. There are multiple different areas, even some semi-private round booths for small groups and a gorgeous, green marble and brass bar. We did feel the food menu didn’t quite match how modern and refined the fit-out was, everything was pretty classic. The cocktail menu looked impressive however failed in execution. I would suggest sticking to a spritz, beer or wine. I went with the Fettuccine Carbonara, cooked nice and Al Dente, not overly creamy or heavy. The Seafood Pescatore was also a good option and not overly fishy. The pizza didn’t look great but it tasted okay. Calamari was nice but very pricey for what you get, felt similar to a cafe style dish and the sauce came in a paper tray. We dined for Mother’s Day on a reduced menu, the restaurant was packed and staff looked like they were struggling to keep up with the amount of diners they had packed in. It took over an hour to receive our mains and our drink orders were lost. Staff were very friendly and apologetic. My feedback would be that Portobello should focus on quality and matching the food to their brand. I will give it another shot in the future.
