I have a soft spot for cozy, counter-focused Japanese restaurants. The only catch is that most of these privately-run places don’t open until after 6 p.m. But sometimes, you wrap up work early and want to start your evening around 5. For nights like that, Ishimaru is the perfect spot. Grilled anago (salted, no sauce), a glass of sake, and a beer as a chaser — it’s the best combination imaginable.
