We are visiting Osage Beach for a family wedding, and stopped in JB Hook's because we were hungry, and their sign in front of the restaurant appealed to us. Blown away!! Even without reservations, we were promptly (and politely) seated at a good table. We were quickly greeted by our waitress, who brought our drinks & took our order as soon as we were ready. We skipped the appetizers, so we would have room for the meal. And we chose wisely. We both chose soup: soup du jour for me (a delightful broccoli & beer cheese soup) & French onion for Hubby. Both were excellent. I had the Steak Woodrow, and I may never again truly enjoy a steak without returning to JB Hook's. Even though I ordered "medium well," and it was cooked exactly as ordered, it was one of the tenderest & tastiest steaks ever! The onions, bacon crumbles, & other toppings were the perfect complement to that great steak. Hubby had the salmon, covered in a caper sauce, which he thoroughly enjoyed. After trying to finish our baked potatoes, we decided against dessert; just no room left! The service was efficient as only a fine restaurant can do, there when wanted and invisible when not. The manager (or perhaps the owner) frequently came out and welcomed those at each table, took a few minutes to chat. That type of attention is what makes a good restaurant really great. I can't say that we will ever make the 10 hour trip back here just for JB Hook's, but if I spot them anywhere else, I will certainly stop in!

We have a condo at the lake and have eaten at JB Hooks several times, first time this season. It is pricey, but is one of the nicest restaurants at the lake…normally. We went for lunch on Memorial Day and had a different experience, very disappointing as the prices were the same, our experience was not. It was self seating and we took a seat at a table that had been cleared and reset. The waitress brought our menus and took the drink order. We had water and tea, she came back immediately and asked if we were ready to order. We hadn’t even had time to look at the menu, which was short because it was lunch. So then she said she would come back. We sat for 20 minutes waiting to order. I picked up my silverware that was on the appetizer plate that was set on the table prior to our arrival. The plate had pieces of food on it, like they reset a dirty plate! Then my husband looked at his, same thing! Three of the four plates on the table were dirty! When she took our order, I showed her the plates. She said “I’ll get you another one.” I was expecting an “OMG, I am so sorry!” But her attitude was like it was not a big deal. My husband ordered seared tuna as the meal and oysters as an appetizer. I ordered wedge salad and blackened salmon. She did not bring out our appetizer and salads before the entree. When she did bring the food, she didn’t bring the oysters at all. She made some excuse like “Sorry, those come from a different part of the kitchen.” Then she brought out 6 oysters (after he had finished most of the entree), when he ordered 12! He said he ordered 12, and she said someone must have picked up the wrong order, she would go back and get the other half of what he ordered. So he ate his meal in stages, basically waiting between the screwups. The food was decent, but the service was so poor, and dirty dishes on the table was gross…we couldn’t help walking away very disappointed. Could not believe we were in JB Hooks. Not the same as in the past. I don’t know that we will be back.
