Warning: Charged $200 to my card without my permission after leaving dangerous glass shards on the floor! Unfortunately, I had a very disappointing experience with JetPark Hotel Rotorua, and have expressed my concerns in a report to the Commerce Commission. This hotel tried to charge me $456 in addition to the $1651 I had already paid them for our stay. To preface this, I have had dyed hair for ten years, and have never had an issue with ANY hotel or accommodation provider about my hair. When I wash my hair, it only takes a simple spray and wipe with supermarket bleach spray to clean the coloured residue - it takes me only seconds, or rarely, a few minutes at most. (If I have had any issue before, I wouldn't have felt that it was okay to wash my hair at the hotel, right?) The morning after I had washed my hair, our 2-year-old son accidentally broke a microwave plate. We called reception straight away and they made housekeeping aware, who arrived shortly after. We then departed the hotel at 11am. At 11:30am, the hotel manager Inus called me to let me know of extra charges due to 'stains' from hair dye residue in the bathroom. I missed his call and received an email saying that I would be charged an additional $456, which included $25 for the broken microwave plate, $90 for a 'stained' duvet, and $200 for 'extra cleaning time'. I paid for the broken microwave plate and replacement of towels, but I disputed the $90 for the duvet and $200 for 'extra cleaning time'. Due to no fault of our own, our 2-year-old son had had nose bleeds the first two nights we stayed, even though he doesn't often get nose bleeds, and this had resulted in a few splotches of blood on the duvet. They waived the $90 just like that. As for the $200 extra cleaning time, I asked: how did I accumulate $200 in cleaning time between 11am-11:30am, half an hour? On top of this, they threatened to charge me more, saying that there were still remaining hair dye stains and that they would try to get them out after we checked out; which would potentially result in even more cleaning charges. The hotel manager didn't provide any calculations or justifications as to how $200 of cleaning was accumulated in 30 minutes; he simply stated it was a flat fee. There was no reasoning given as to why and how they chose to specifically charge $200. I proved my point: during my stay in Rotorua, I went to the supermarket and bought some basic supermarket bleach spray along with Pink Stuff cleaning paste. I used these on the remaining hair dye stains for a few seconds (yes, seconds!) and these stains were GONE. The housekeeping manager Shalini and I went to the room together and she viewed the bathroom with her own eyes, confirming that it was clean and spotless. The hotel manager said that our bathroom had required three cleaners cleaning 'for a significant amount of time'. We disputed this because on the day, we'd returned to our room to find glass shards still on the floor, endangering us and our young children. If three cleaners had supposedly cleaned our room for a significant amount of time, why were there still glass shards on the floor? The hotel manager said this was due to having items in the way. But our entire stay in the hotel over the 5 days, the space that was cleaned was completely clear. We did not have any items or anything obstructing the kitchen and bathroom floor at any time, and this is where the glass shards were found. The $200 cleaning fee was never justified and they charged it to our card WITHOUT permission. Since I have never had any issue with any hotel regarding my hair in ten years, how could Jet Park Hotel Rotorua have had such a big problem with it? To me, it comes across as them being either incompetent or malicious. Even if the issue is not hair dye or nose bleeds, beware of this hotel. I look forward to the Commerce Commission's response to my report. Consumer is also aware, with the information needed for any articles about hotel charges in the future.
