I came to pay my respect at the temple and ate lunch here. They are still on a limited menu. Not many choices. My favorite dish is gone. Service was okay. Their servers are all volunteers so they are not professionals. Be patient if you are going to eat here.

Nothing like eating vegetarian food at the Buddhist Temple on Lunar New Year! Every table seemed to have ordered the satay skewer. I expected it to taste like tofu, but to my surprise it tasted like meat LOL the texture when you bite into it is not sofu, but rather chewy As you would expect, the staff there are friendly and patient, and the inside is clean with basic renovations that are bare, functional, appropriate, and clean. Of course would definitely come back, especially on Chinese new year!

The Jyun Kang Vegetarian Restaurant is one of Ukiah's hidden treasures. It's cash only&has limited hours, so make a pilgrimage of it. It's best to come early so you can walk the grounds, behold the deer&the peacocks, drop by the bookstore, and stop by the temple. One can even see the monastery/convent cafeteria with its many-armed Buddha. The service is great, the food is wonderful, plus there's a lending library of Buddhist literature one can consume (figuratively) while eating. Their sweet&sour golden nuggets are a treasure. They've even released a cookbook- buddhisttexts.org/wokwis… While some of their recipes have exotic ingredients like burdock, fiddleheads, lily flowers, mung bean sprouts and Japanese yam cakes, they do have accessible recipes like avocado tofu salad (very Californian), stir fried cabbage and Chinese-style macaroni with tomato sauce. Since they adhere to a stricter version of Buddhism, not only are they vegan, but they forbid onions, shallots, garlic and scallions/leeks. But they're not like stricter forms that forbid carrots, potatoes, coriander, and asafetida. Their ban on onions, scallions, garlic et al is also in common with some schools of Hinduism/Jainism- clovegarden.com/diet/hin… This is reflected in their excellent, accessible cookbook with inspirational quotes from the Dalai Lama, Ellen G. White (the founder of 7th Day Adventism), Albert Einstein, Charles Darwin&Alicia Silverstone. The Jyung Kan restaurant is a destination restaurant. It's a scenic drive thru Lake&Sonoma counties into the forested earthly paradise of Mendocino. A hidden marvel, at the largest Buddhist center in the United States.
