If you’re staying near Schipol and don’t feel like taking the train into the city, this is probably the best restaurant you can visit. The restaurant has a nice local feel, the beers are great and the food is superb - especially the pear tartin and steak. Meal type: Dinner Price per person: €40–50 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

On Friday evening (May 29th), after 5 PM, our group of 10 visited Kastan in Hoofddorp. As it is one of the few bars/restaurants conveniently located near the station and business district, we have visited before and generally enjoyed the quality of the drinks. Unfortunately, this was likely our last visit due to the unprofessional and unfriendly attitude of the dark-haired waitress who was serving us that evening. At one point, she approached us in a reproachful manner, complaining that she could not hear an order being placed at a nearby table because of our conversation. We immediately and politely asked whether we could be moved to another area where we would not disturb anyone. We understand that Kastan is both a restaurant and a bar, but with tables placed so closely together, it is difficult for a group of 10 people to talk quietly while still hearing each other. The waitress told us that moving was not possible and that we could only change tables if a larger one became available. We even suggested moving upstairs, but were told that nobody would serve us there. The most disappointing moment came later when the waitress informed us that a reservation for 8 people was arriving soon and that we would have to leave our table. We were seated at a large table with around half of the seats still empty, there was no reservation sign anywhere, and the way this was communicated felt inappropriate and unwelcoming. It’s a shame because the drinks were genuinely good, but hospitality is just as important as the quality of the menu. We left feeling like our presence as a group was an inconvenience rather than something the venue welcomed. Based on this experience, Kastan will no longer be our meeting place of choice. If groups of friends or colleagues enjoying a few drinks are considered a problem, then perhaps this venue is better suited for guests looking for a quiet dinner and a quick departure afterwards. Dear Klaudia, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I'm genuinely glad to hear you've always enjoyed our drinks, that part means a lot to me and my team. That said, I'd like to offer some context. Friday evening was one of our busiest nights and we were nearly fully booked with reservations. When a reservation for 8 dinner guests arrives at a certain time, we do need to ask your walk-in drinks group of 10 to move, which we did a half hour in advance. Which is, unfortunately for your party, standard practice when tables are reserved. An alternative spot to continue your evening was offered and we're sorry you chose not to take us up on that. As for moving upstairs: our venue operates as two separate spaces, and serving guests upstairs requires dedicated staffing. On a fully booked evening, we simply didn't have the capacity to do that without compromising service to our other guests. Which is a choice I stand behind. We understand it may have felt uncomfortable to be asked to adjust, and we're sorry if the communication didn't land the way it was intended. However, we do want to be honest: guests with reservations will always take priority and making a reservation is the easiest way to guarantee your spot, especially for a group. Not every visit will suit every guest and I fully respect that. We'll continue to warmly welcome those who understand the realities of a busy hospitality evening and for your next outing, we'd love to see you back, ideally having made a reservation in advance.
