Was driving home from work, still a good half hour or more to go, and didn't want to leave dinner too late. I'd passed by St John's Hill many times before and always noticed the lively atmosphere in the evenings — young professionals out and about, everywhere looking busy and inviting — and kept meaning to stop and try somewhere, but never quite got round to it. Today, Katsuro popped into my head out of nowhere as I was driving, and it turned out to be right there in that same neighbourhood I'd been curious about all along. Perfect timing, so I stopped in. I'd also had a cold with a chesty cough, and had a vague memory of hearing pork could help with that — figured the cabbage salad (which they give plenty of) would balance out the richness, so in I went. The place is Korean-run but serves proper, old-school Japanese tonkatsu, and it shows. I went for the signature tonkatsu (£24, not exactly cheap for a solo dish) plus two extra pieces of cheese katsu and a side of curry sauce — the cabbage salad and rice both come with a free refill, which is a nice touch. The cheese katsu arrived first, and one bite in I knew this was the real deal — properly crisp, with meat and cheese balanced just right rather than one drowning out the other. The signature tonkatsu followed shortly after, beautifully plated with a whole array of dips: the classic sesame-flecked brown sauce, Japanese pickles, salt, wasabi, and even truffle oil. Each slice had both a lean and a fattier side, so you genuinely got a different experience depending on where you dipped. Salt and truffle oil on the lean cuts, wasabi on the fattier ones — all worked brilliantly. The curry sauce mixed into a bowl of rice was a particular highlight. Came to £45 in total, which isn't pocket change for tonkatsu, but honestly it felt worth every penny. This tastes like the level of tonkatsu that's taken over Korea in the last few years, finally made its way to London properly. Will absolutely be back to try more of the menu.
