Disappointed

Khoune Kham Lao & Thai restaurant serves a variety of authentic Lao and Thai dishes. It is located across from Fairfield station (same side as Fairfield RSL club).

A friend recommended me to try this restaurant as they serve authentic Lao and Thai dishes. She had me at 'ox tongue'. It doesn't sound appetising for some, but if seasoned and cooked right, it is yummy when dipped in the salty, sweet, spicy sauce.

We came for dinner and there was only another family dining at the time we arrived. It was small with outdated furniture. When we were seated, we asked for a high chair from a male waiter and wasn't sure he heard us as he walked off without acknowledging us. We asked a female waitress and she said that the male waiter was getting it. She removed the plates from the kids and said she was going to provide plastic cutlery and plates/bowls. That was the last time we saw her. We had to ask again when the food arrived for the cutlery for the kids. We eventually received our high chair. We were given a complimentary plate of mixed vegetables: iceberg lettuce, cabbage and mint leaves. I'm assuming it is meant to be eaten with your spicy food to provide a cooling effect and to complement your dish as no explanation was given when it was given to us. We did not eat it as the lettuce was brown, wasn't sure how fresh the other vegetables were.

We had some issues with getting some attention from the waitstaff as everyone seemed to be busy walking quickly in and out the back and serving dishes one by one to other customers. I could only assume there was one or very minimal chefs working as we too had the same problem when receiving our dishes. My husband was the last to receive his dish and we were already half way through our meals when it arrived. We had to ask again and was told it was coming. We also overheard another family asking for a dish they still hadn't received. There were only 3 other tables occupied, not sure why they looked overwhelmed. Not sure if this was considered their busiest night? We were not impressed.

The menus need updating, pictures of the food are set against a bright yellow background and prices/dishes are written down on labels. It was also dirty and falling apart. We just wanted to order some drinks and entree to start off whilst we decided on our main meals. I ordered a warm Thai milk tea, dried beef and ox tongue. When we decided on our main meals, we asked to place an order but was told by the same male waiter that we should order all at once as they are busy tonight and probably would have missed the order as we placed another order. The order was written down and surely enough, we had to remind them of the missing meals. For our main meal, we ordered a Seafood Pad Thai, Lao Papaya salad (medium heat), Gravy stir fried noodles with beef (no vegetables), and large sticky rice.

The Thai milk tea was luke warm but good temperature to share with the kids. Normally I enjoy my Thai milk tea but I found it tasted a bit weird. Normally Thai milk tea is served cold with ice but it was too cold to have it with ice.

The dried beef was really tough and thin. It tasted okay. There also wasn't much of it. We've had it at some places still chewy, probably because it was thicker pieces.

The BBQ marinated ox tongue was a major let down. Was looking forward to it but it was firm, barely had soft pieces to share with the kids. We had trouble eating it. It wasn't fresh as normally it is soft and slightly chewy. The dipping sauce was nice.

The Lao Papaya salad was nice. It tasted relatively fresh with the tomatoes but was very 'fishy' tasting which I didn't mind. I like the added dried shrimp garnished on top. It was hot but paired nicely with the sticky rice. We had to ask for the rice again as it was missed. It was cooked well, not wet and sticky.

The Seafood Pad Thai was nice with the plump and soft prawns but I wanted more seafood as the only other seafood was small pieces of squid/octopus and there wasn't much of it. The flavours were nice but mild, wanted more flavour. Not sure why they garnished the side of the dish with shallots, peanuts and dried chilli flakes, they probably should have put it in individual ramekins or notifed me when I placed the order whether I wanted these as I would have said no.

The Gravy stir fried noodles with beef not only took a long time to arrive but when it did, it was sloppily presented and a lot of the meat was raw. (My husband took a bad picture but you could still see the meat was pink). The noodles were overcooked and every time we tried to pick up the noodles, it would break. There was way too much gravy and flavours were okay.

Verdict: Food was mediocre. Only the Lao Papaya salad and sticky rice was nice. They should pay more attention to presentation of their food as only the ox tongue (preferred a garnish) and salad looked nice to eat. If it's not fresh, don't serve it. Menus need updating. Staff need to better manage tables and provide good customer service. First and last time dining here.

Many great Thai/Lao options in Fairfield, and for everyone else it would usually be Lao Village but Khourne Kham is definitely my main. All my experiences here have been above 3.5 no doubt. Cheaper prices than most the neighbouring thai/lao restaurants and also I feel like its a lot cleaner. They make the dishes I love to my liking.
