Another fantastic dinner tonight at La Rocca. My Halibut was amazing over a delicious risotto seasoned to perfection. A perfect setting for a great meal and conversation with a very attentive staff. You won't be disappointed! Food: 5 Service: 5 Meal type: Dinner

I was really looking forward to celebrating my husband’s birthday at La Rocca Osteria in Montclair, hoping we would have a special experience. Unfortunately, the evening was quite disappointing. We arrived a few minutes early, around 4:55 pm and our reservation was at 5pm and were told we had to wait outside rather than being offered a place to sit. When I simply asked to confirm a special birthday request I had made, the way the manager addressed another staff member about my request felt unnecessarily rude and immediately left me with a bad impression. One of the few things that made the evening pleasant was Jackie. She was genuinely warm, attentive, and very nice. Honestly, she is too good for this place and was one of the bright spots of our experience. Unfortunately, the food didn’t make up for the rest. We started with the octopus, which I expected to be grilled, but it tasted more boiled than grilled and was served with a green sauce that I didn’t find appealing. The beef tartare was okay. We also shared the fig salad, which had an overwhelming amount of lemon juice and was extremely tart and bitter. I had to request balsamic on the side to help balance the flavor. For our entrées, my husband had the rack of lamb. It was okay, but the dish was very heavy on potatoes with relatively little else. I ordered the salmon, which was actually very good—crispy and flavorful—but again, there was an excessive amount of mashed potatoes. The table for two was also extremely small, to the point where I had nowhere to put my clutch. I had also read that the chef had Michelin recognition, so I went in with fairly high expectations. Having dined at Michelin-starred restaurants before , I can honestly say that this experience did not feel remotely close to that level for me. The food and overall execution simply did not meet the standard I was expecting. Overall, I was disappointed, especially because this was my husband’s birthday and I had really hoped to make the evening special. Jackie was wonderful and deserves recognition, but unfortunately, the overall experience did not live up to my expectations. I definitely would not return.
