This is my review of a Montesilvano restaurant called ""LA FATA"" on Corso Umberto. During the past few weeks, we have enjoyed several meals there - until this last meal. A table of 4 for dinner, (including a 3-year-old), 2 ordered their sliced beef dish served on a sizzling hot plate - a Brazilian dish. Much to our disappointment, the meat that was served was old - off - gone bad. It smelled bad and tasted bad - not such a surprise, in the restaurant business - it happens. (Clearly both portions that were served came from the same batch of bad beef). One of our parties took the plate to the counter and politely explained that the meat was off - tasted and smelled no good. Much to her shock, the response from the Owner, Annarita, was an intense argument! She wasn't surprised at all (strange) and instead, she tasted a piece, invited her staff to taste a piece, and then loudly argued that our complaint as flat wrong - that we didn't appreciate the Brazilian flavor. Fortunately, we have travelled the world, enjoyed all kinds of foods in many many countries, consider ourselves real carnivore aficionados, and really understand when meat goes bad. I have also been an established restaurant critic for over 10 years myself. (Further, our 3-year-old was to enjoy this meat dish too, which obviously was never going to happen.) We politely asked for another substitute, and she replied, "You have to pay extra for the other dish. " Annarita's response was simply to tell us to shove it - eat the spoiled meat dish or else! Never, ever, anywhere, have I experience this level of poor service and response. The servers, who know us because we have enjoyed food there before, as we walked out of the door, even apologized for Annarita's behavior! Obviously, the ownership of this restaurant does not understand that there is only ONE response to a customer who complains about a dish - just one response - NO MATTER THE CUSTOMER'S COMPLAINT - "So sorry. How can we satisfy you with your meal?" Never an argument. Never a "take it or lave it" attitude. Never an insult. Never raising her voice and making it a big hullabaloo. Just an immediate apology and quiet discussion on how to fix the problem. To amplify the issue here, "LA FATA" is the ONLY restaurant that we have experienced in all of Abruzzo that requires that the customer pay in advance for the food being served! (Other than McDonalds of course!) No other restaurants even consider accepting payment until the customer has finished the meal, or the expresso, or the ice cream, or anything else, until you are ready to leave. Well, perhaps this is the secret - "LA FATA" routinely serves subgrade food, upset customers walk out, and they risk not being paid. Brilliantly, Annarita has solved THAT problem. Don't like dish, you are plumb out of luck! Finally, let's look at the money involved here. These steak dishes cost us €14 each- that's €28. A substitute would likely have been on the menu for €12 to €14 each, which cost to the establishment is half of that amount. So, for a total of €15 in out-of-pocket cost to the restaurant for 2 replacement dishes, they created this huge crisis, and this very negative review. Annarita, we call that piss-poor-planning! So, people beware. "LA FATA" serves crap food, you pay in advance, and if you don't like it, tough! Stay away. There are hundreds of other nearby restaurants who will always take very good care of you and your party- but not "LA FATA."
