I chose to visit Longboards in Newport News based on the Hawaiian theme and great menu I read about online, and because we live just a couple of miles away. This restaurant is located in nicer area of Newport News, a smaller version of the City Center area, in the Stoneybrook area of Denbigh, so I was optimistic in trying it out. Here it was Friday night and I wanted to take my husband out for a nice dinner after our long work week, so we went there for dinner. There was absolutely nothing reminiscent of Hawaii upon entering this restaurant besides some type of thatch work material around the bar area. This place has a very large floor space and is a huge missed opportunity on the layout and much-needed decor and ambiance. We arrived at around 7pm. Upon walking through the front door, there was a pool of water sitting in what appears to be a water fountain of sorts, just sitting there stagnant. When we passed through the second set of entry doors around 7pm or so, the first thing that struck me was that there was nothing whatsoever reminiscent in the decor nor the vibe in this space that was anything reminiscent of Hawaii. Besides the lack of a (professed) Hawaiian theme, unfortunately this particular place has the feeling of a dive bar adequately equipped with tape-repaired bar stool covers. We chose to eat at the bar because the other indoor seating appeared isolated and I didn't want to sit out in the patio area because in case someone went out there to smoke. Our server, who was also the bartender, I believe his name is Jeremy, was an absolute sweetheart and very attentive to us. I will say that the food was the saving grace and truly lived up to the menu descriptions. We chose to share a bowl of the crab soup for an appetizer and then had the chicken wings along with the fish and chips for our entrees. I did observe one of the bartender's young daughter around the back side of the bar (directly in front of a refrigerated dispenser for bourbon, etc). If there is going to be a Hawaiian theme, I would love to see the staff have a more fun, yet professional and uniformed appearance when it comes to their work attire. If you strip this place of it's alleged Hawaiian theme, it still looks like a tired, run-down dive bar as soon as you walk in. If you're going to pay rent for this large of a space, DO SOMETHING USEFUL WITH IT. We were surprised to see that we were the only other couple in there at the time, with 1 or 2 other walk-ins for beverages-only during the entire hour we were there because the food is great. Passing by Quaker Steak & Lube and seeing it was packed and then find Longboards to be essentially empty was pretty sad because the food offered is better, in my personal opinion. I don't mind placing an order for food to pick up from here, but I probably will not spend the time to dine in again.
