I took the intro macaron class at Macaron Bar yesterday and honestly it was one of the best experiences I’ve had in a long time. The space itself is adorable, super clean, and very well kept (which matters a lot to me). The whole atmosphere just felt welcoming and calm. Our instructor, I believe his name was Kyle, was phenomenal. He explained everything so clearly, and his energy made the whole experience comfortable, enjoyable, and honestly fascinating. He had such a great vibe that I really loved. Funny enough, I went in thinking I wouldn’t even like macarons. I’ve never had one before, and I was completely wrong—they’re easily going in my top 5 pastries now. The class was absolutely worth the price. I learned a lot, had a great time, and left with a new appreciation for something I didn’t expect to enjoy at all. I’ll definitely be back for the advanced class. Highly, highly recommend. My husband surprised me with a date here for the beginners’ macaron making class and we had a great time! Kyle was a stellar instructor, walking us through step-by-step with a demonstration and good descriptions of how to handle each part of the process. Knowing this is a finicky pastry, his teaching style made everything a lot less intimidating, and we felt very proud of our finished product. We made macarons from start to finish in about 3 hours, and you end up sampling a plain macaron shell to see what the flavor profile is, and you also get to pick one macaron from the display out front to try. Macarons at this establishment are made with ganache fillings- a little bit goes a long way, as we found out from having overfilled a few shells and the ganache overwhelmed the shell flavor (fun fact: all macaron shells are the same flavor, it’s the filling that makes them different!). When you’re buying them from the display, know that they are rich and a specialty pastry that takes a lot of talent to make well, and that is reflected in the pricing model and, in my opinion, means that you should enjoy them in more than one bite to appreciate them. For the class, between two people, you end up with about 3 dozen macarons with different flavorings (vanilla, birthday cake, dark chocolate, and rose- rose is a traditional French flavor and we were apprehensive about it but it’s our favorite). You also walk out with recipes for the shells and different flavored fillings, and we were encouraged to take notes if it was helpful to us, so I’m eager to try to make some at home. You will work with one other person to make the macarons, so this is perfect for a date or a fun friend activity, so if you sign up by yourself, know that you’ll be working with someone. Due to an uncontrollable circumstance, our original class time was canceled and needed to be rescheduled, and Kyle was very professional and apologetic and kind about the situation. We were able to be flexible so it wasn’t a concern, but it was very stand-out how it was handled. Also, the branding of Macaron Bar is 10/10, very well done with the color scheme and design. As far as parking goes, it can be very challenging to find a spot. We took the recommendation to arrive 10-15 minutes early and actually arrived 20 minutes early, but it was a beautiful day and Lawrenceville was so packed that we kept circling without being able to find a spot. My husband dropped me off right at the class start time and just then found a spot, so if it’s a nice day, you’ll benefit from arriving extra early! The macarons are great here, but I’d definitely book a class if you’re able to get the full experience and appreciation of the macaron. I was so excited to go and buy every flavor they had the person that helped at checkout was amazing. Unfortunately the macarons were lackluster The Filling was barely there and many of the more subtle flavors just tasted like almond flour. This was my first experience with macarons other than my own, so I am not expert, just giving my opinion. Price per person: $40–50 Food: 2 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 3
