This German restaurant is not only a destination and a must during a Milwaukee visit, but also an establishment that has so many historical stories. The food, service, and ambience of this restaurant is just amazing! There is a valet service and street parking available. I highly recommend making reservations. The evenings definitely get very busy. I have only dined there twice in six years, but both experiences were so wonderful. Friendly service, incredible ambience, and flavorful food! On their about us page they share "Mader's was founded in 1902, before the Wright brothers first flight and before Henry Ford's Model T. A porterhouse steak or roast duckling dinner were priced at 20 cents. Lunch was four cents. A stein of beer was three cents. If you drank two steins of beer, your lunch was free." This is not just a destination but an institution. This is also a very special place to my other half's family. Many celebrations and dinners were hosted here over the 120 years. It is also a very special place because many of the artifacts and carvings or sculptures we're done by their families ancestors. "120 years later.. to this day, Mader's Restaurant is still entirely family owned and operated. Indeed this is a blessing to the city of Milwaukee in the preservation of heritage establishments." I love this restaurant and love the history and preservation of history. Thank you for an amazing meal and experience. Not worth the price anymore. Dining area was uncomfortably warm. Food was nothing like it used to be.

Visiting from TN. Spent 6 years in Germany during military stay. Was stationed in 3 different locations. Say all of this to give you some background as this is not my first rodeo with German cuisine. The waitress as short and snapy and did not make us feel as tho she was there for us. We were a party of 4 with reservations. We ordered the giant pretzel with cheese and mustard to start with. It was excellent and is where the single star comes from. I am a huge fan of schnitzel (Jager sauce is my preference) and this is what I ordered. It came out slower than you would expect but they were full and had a wedding outdoors as well. The schnitzel was small (especially for the price) cold and the Jager sauce was cold and barley existent. The potato dumpling was stiff and room temperature. Drinks were refilled only as they were emptied. Very disappointed after reading all of the reviews and seeing how Mader's was voted best German food in the upper East. IMO do not waste your time at this overpriced and underwhelming restaurant with terrible food and service. Only stop in and order the giant pretzel. Better yet, take it to go.
