As close to authentic Americana as one might deem possible in Provincial Sweden! Picture this: along way outside of the nearest city, along a 2-lane winding road, you find a small town where everybody knows everyone. There's one grocery store, a liquor store, and a grand ol' railway building built in the 1850s which *never quite* realised the potential that the forefathers thought it might reach. Just opposite the gas station, you find Mandy's Diner. I could be describing one of any number of small-town American towns, but I'm not. I'm talking about Töreboda. The entire setup is either an absolute masterclass in planning, or an inadvertent stroke of Genius - I would not have blinked twice had a mounted cowboy tipped his stetson to me in passing. Once through the entrance, you're greeted by the bright red diner-style seating which serves as the defining standard for any such restaurant. Old license plates line the walls, along with other memorabilia. Johnny Cash and other inoffensive tunes gently cascade over well-placed speakers, reminiscent of the days when a jukebox would have done the same, at a volume where it intersplices the space otherwise filled by happy conversation. The smiling waitress soon slides colourful menus to each of our group. Inside is a surprisingly detailed selection of American classics. With Appetisers, burgers, grills, salads and much much more on offer, there's something for absolutely everyone. And of course, homemade pie to finish. Each dish is cooked to order in the kitchen. We visited when it was a relatively busy Friday evening, but still received our dishes without undue delay. The appetisers were served hot and fresh, and the burgers we ordered arrived shortly after we'd finished our starters. Each dish was well-presented - and finger-food items were served with a wetwipe to help maintain dignity. An extensive selection of drinks including milkshakes and coke floats is available from the staffed bar. Although the prices are not cheap, one still leaves with a feeling of value-for-money - the execution of the dishes certainly matches the pricepoint with well-assembled, well-cooked juicy burgers being amongst the items we enjoyed. My friend ordered the tacos which arrived with a much more diverse complexity of components and flavours than would meet minimum requirements if corners were being cut. Certain quirks and omissions remind one that, after all, this remains imitation cuisine, although at the risk of sounding unfair I'll qualify this statement by again reflecting that this restaurant is thousands of miles away from the kind of diner it pulls an excellent attempt to imitate. Nevertheless, there was no "bread for the table", nor were there free refills. The portion sizes, whilst passable, were far more European in nature than their cross-Atlantic counterparts. This is Sweden after all. At the end of the meal, payment was accepted by cash or by card. Unfortunately, another quirk presented itself. In almost every restaurant ever, the server presents the card machine, and the customer can choose to add an tip. Not in Mandy's. I was presented with a blank screen where I had to type it my desired total payment amount, and calculate the tip myself and add it onto the total. Oh, and did I mention the card machine only lets you tip 20% above the total cost of the bill. After a moderately-frustrating experience, I opted to augment my tip to the fantastic service team with some more cash. All in all, I left Mandy's feeling full, happy, and well catered to. If I'm ever back in the area, I would not hesitate to rush straight back. Service: Dine in Meal type: Dinner Price per person: kr 300–400
