Unfortunately, the overall experience was somewhat underwhelming and didn’t quite live up to the expectations set by previous reviews. The food was generally good, although not as impressive as we had anticipated. The lamb was flavoursome, but rather than being presented as a defined cut, it seemed to consist of various smaller pieces of meat. The duck was cooked well, although we found it lacking somewhat in flavour. The beef tartare was very tasty, but the portion was extremely small. Our group chose the two-course menu at $95 per person, with the option of selecting entrée, main or dessert. Most of us chose entrée and main, while two people selected main and dessert. This is where the timing of the service became an issue. All of the entrées arrived together, leaving the two people who had not ordered entrées sitting without food. The mains then arrived some time later, after which the majority of the group were left waiting while the two remaining guests had their desserts. It felt as though the sequencing of the meals had not really been considered. A better approach would have been to treat whichever dish each person selected first as the first course, and their remaining dish as the second course. That way, everyone at the table could have eaten together rather than having some guests sitting with nothing while others were eating. Service was also a little inconsistent. Our server initially attempted to remember everyone’s orders but unfortunately forgot them and had to return with a notepad and take the orders again. That in itself was no major issue. More disappointing was the wine service. Our bottle was placed on a spare table nearby and, on several occasions, we ended up retrieving it ourselves to refill our glasses. We noticed other tables doing the same thing. This was surprising given that the restaurant was neither particularly busy nor appeared to be short of wait staff. The general consensus among our group was that the experience was lacklustre. Nothing was particularly terrible, but equally, very little stood out or matched the standard we had expected based on the restaurant’s reputation and previous reviews. Perhaps we simply visited on an off day, but unfortunately the experience didn’t leave us inclined to return to find out. Hi Scott Yes we should have been clearer with the delay for your guests that did not have entree's and managed this better by just asking the question of how you would like to see the flow of food for your experience. We really do appreciate the detailed feedback as it gives us the chance to improve our processes in this case ensuring future guests do not have a similar experience. Margans wines are a beautiful establishment and part of the reputation of the Hunter Valley. I was able to attend the lovely venue in the down 'off-ish' season and was greeted with beautiful architecture, cascading stone and friendly atmosphere by the welcoming team. The event attending was for my beloved friend's Hens, although it was a quiet affair. We had Steve look after us, and he was the biggest highlight in our 6 person booking for the entire day if not entire trip down for my friend's wedding. Steve's explanations, curiosity, general chin wagging and expertise in the area of wine was impeccable. Ontop of this, we were blessed with a quick chat as Lisa Margan popped her head in. Which was an honour, and Lisa was such a bonus. A lady with much refinery herself and genuinely welcoming checking in on us. Purchased a few bottles ( about a box of 6) but will be making Margan a regular stop in future for all trips to the valley and part of my curated wines. And potentially try to supply more of their range with a local wine bar in my home region. - Margans team also responded diligently when I made an error on booking (Wednesday and needed it to be for thursday) and were quick to respond and amend my error. Overall, no faults. And so warm, toasty and cosy in the building. Meal type: Other Price per person: A$20–40

10/10 SERVICE I haven’t experienced 5-star table service for a while in Australia, and Margan definitely exceeded my expectations. The hosts are keen to showcase the best on offer, explaining each dish & the origin of the property with great pride. Im usually skeptical of duck, however this was well executed & the roasted quince was something special. That beef dish (which you make as a bit of a wrap) was a taste sensation- individually the ingredients were meh but together it was spectacular. Most of the char flavours come from the ingredients being cooked on the hibachi grill/bbq. Strawberry sorbet had a wonderful chocolate crumb - Im not usually a fan of white chocolate but this dish easily converted me. Very talented chef - creative & understands flavour. Definitely drop in for some of the dishes I mentioned love the innovation! Meal type: Lunch Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
