En la campiña inglesa cerca de Newcastle, en medio de la nada, se alza este hotel extraordinariamente tranquilo, detenido en el tiempo. Antigua casa señorial, hoy hospeda a los que huyen del mundanal ruido. Y a los golfistas. Cerca, el muro de Adriano.

Arrival: We arrived to the matfen hall hotel later than expected due to traffic (although check in online does state anytime from 3pm until 12am). We were left for approximately 10/15 minutes without any interaction as no one was on reception. There was a nice driver (whom didn’t work for the hotel) who guided us on where to find staff. We eventually found a staff member who wasn’t part of the check in process therefore was left to wait for a longer duration of time. When we were eventually checked in, the process was rushed and no information was given to ourselves. We were asked if we wanted to be taken to our room, signed a check in form but no information about the hotel/ breakfast or spa. We appreciated that we arrived late but the whole process was very rushed when we finally found someone! Room: The room was great, it was clean and spacious. One issue was how hot the room was although there was a Dyson fan which saved the day. The tv had a Netflix button on the tv remote but we were unable to access Netflix. Food: Our first meal at this hotel was breakfast (we did not have any guidance on where breakfast was served prior to check in but did have a card on the door for breakfast to be brought to us) therefore we chose this option. The breakfast food was great however we did have items missing (toast and coffee) we did ring up reception regarding this and the toast and coffee was still not brought by 12noon therefore we left this and headed to the spa. Food: We had a bite to eat at the 1832 (which is a more a bar but can grab small bites) we opted for the ham sandwhich and fries. Unfortunately the fries did have a hair in, we did make them aware of this and we did get the fries for free in the end. Overall, the service was slow but we were made aware of this and how busy the staff were so we didn’t mind. Food: We had dinner in the Keepers restaurant, the food was excellent and the service was faultless. We can not fault it here!!!! Spa: We loved that the spa was open from 7am until 21:30pm with the stay, this was a great feature with no time limits. The spa had a fridge where unlimited water was offered which was a great feature. Unfortunately, it lacked staff presence meaning towels and empty water bottles were left quite frequently by guests. It is advertised to have an ice sink although this was empty, the thermal suite was basic and the hot tub bubbles don’t last for too long. We noticed that other guests were having welcome drinks brought to them although we didn’t have this experience and was never offered this. Overall thoughts: The grounds and hotel itself were very clean and outstanding but the service wasn’t great, although not from an attitude stand point , from them genuinely not knowing what to do. We assumed every staff member worked for a specific department and didn’t know what to do in other departments. Although it’s rated a 5* hotel, we didn’t have a 5* experience unfortunately.
