We stumbled into Maya while wandering around Charlottesville with absolutely no plan, which is apparently the best way to find great restaurants. The place is covered in art. Not “a few paintings on the wall” art. Art everywhere. Even the bathroom stalls are curated. At one point I wasn’t sure whether I was having dinner or being admitted into a gallery. The patio is adorable, complete with little plants on the tables that looked healthier than any plant I’ve ever owned. The oysters arrived at warp speed. I’m pretty sure they were already on their way to our table when we sat down. We ordered a salad to share, and they split it into two portions for us without hesitation. Then came the cornbread croutons. I don’t want to be dramatic, but I would seriously consider changing religions if those croutons started one. The blackened catfish was outstanding, and they split that into two plates as well. Honestly, every single thing we ate was incredible. Not a weak link on the table. The kind of meal where you keep taking bites of each other’s food and saying, “Okay, but try this.” The table came with a water carafe, which made me feel sophisticated and hydrated—a rare combination. Our waitress was wonderful—attentive, funny, and attractive enough that my date spent part of the evening evaluating her options. Thankfully, the food was good enough to remind her why she brought me. Five stars. Great food, great service, great atmosphere, thoughtful touches everywhere, and enough hospitality to make two wandering strangers feel like regulars. We’ll absolutely be back. If you’re in Charlottesville, go to Maya. And if you’re the founder of the Church of Cornbread Croutons, I am ready to hear your message. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Price per person: $30–40
