This review is on food and service at the recently renovated Mazatlan Grill. Dios Mio! What happened to this place? My girlfriend and I went in midweek @ 7PM. The atmosphere was tomb-like, which should've tipped me off--even on a Wednesday. But--we needed to get out of the house. Anyway, I ordered the special, a chili Colorado burrito. Our service was fast--a little rushed even. A quick cereal bowl full of "cash and carry" chips with some horrible pace-style salsa (not the usual here) and it was all business with a notepad: "What can I get you?" In charmingly accented English. My girlfriend ordered Carbonara tacos-which were ultimately tolerable. On the other hand, five minutes later, the waiter plopped two absolutely volcanically heated plates in front of us. Too hot to even touch to turn. I believe there were sear marks on the table afterward. Ok: My chili Colorado burrito: some kind of contador brand red-mole stuff reminiscent of a chef boyardee (Franco American--no kidding) product swamped a smallish, tortilla wrapped blob of undefinable meat (beef, I'm guessing). A haphazard spray of refried beans and rice accompanied the revolting offering. Look, I was hungry and didn't want to make a scene that could ruin the dining experience of all the other Covid refugees present, so I ate it. It was edible--and to be fair to Mazatlan, I didn't become ill. Still, the hurry up, order, eat and get out gestalt continued. One of my pet peeves is a server you never see again until you've wolfed down your mediocre food, "How is your food?" "Already gobbled up in its 'Meh' glory, my good man." Listen, Mazatlan: you didn't do yourself any favors this time, and that's how places go out of business, no matter how nice the building is. Maybe you have someone new in the kitchen, I don't know--but this cafeteria mentality has to stop!
