I decided to take my wife out for an early Mother’s Day brunch at Mimosa Cafe because nothing says “celebrating mom” quite like mimosas and breakfast food you don’t have to cook yourself. Walking in, the atmosphere was actually pretty decent. For a moment, we thought we found a hidden gem. That moment passed quickly. We wanted to start with an appetizer, the empanadas specifically. You’d think with Mother’s Day around the corner they’d be stocked up enough to avoid telling someone’s mother “sorry, we don’t have that.” But apparently the empanadas were more of a suggestion than a menu item. So we skipped appetizers altogether and moved on to the drinks and main dishes. We ordered the mimosa flight: strawberry, mango, peach, and guava. At least that’s what the menu claimed. In reality, it was more like “Guess That Color.” No flavor profiles whatsoever, just four glasses with slightly different shades and a single strawberry slice trying its best to carry the whole experience. The server didn’t explain which was which either. Maybe that was part of the game. Bonus points for bringing us a whole pitcher of water with one glass to share between me and my wife. Very romantic. Nothing strengthens a marriage like taking turns hydrating. My wife ordered the huevos rancheros with hashbrowns and fruit. The huevos rancheros looked like a tostada somebody made during a power outage with canned tomato sauce poured on top. My wife described it perfectly: “It looks like what your toddler would proudly make you for Mother’s Day.” The hashbrowns were okay, but the fruit tasted like it was picked before it emotionally accepted becoming fruit. And that’s unfortunate because my wife actually loves cantaloupe. I ordered the breakfast house plate with pancakes. The menu photo looked great. The actual plate looked like the kitchen got hit with a 30-second evacuation warning. The pancakes somehow managed to be both soggy AND dry at the same time, which honestly deserves scientific recognition. When the server asked how the food was, we politely said it was “just alright.” Most places would maybe ask if we wanted something different or try to fix the issue. Instead we got an “Oh, it’s okay” followed by a disappearing act Houdini himself would respect. We barely touched the mimosas, and not once did anyone stop by to ask if something was wrong. The server reappeared only when it was time to pay the bill. Incredible timing. No thank you. Do yourself a favor: walk across the parking lot and give Agaves Mexican Grill a try instead. Not too shabby over there. Meal type: Brunch Price per person: $40–50 Food: 1 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 3
