UPDATE: The hours for breakfast, lunch, and dinner have changed so many times over the years that I've lost count. The business hours posted on Yelp are incorrect. I would advise customers to call in advance to confirm, but even that isn't foolproof. Case in point: I called twice last Saturday to confirm if they would be open for lunch on Memorial Day. The first time I called, the woman on the phone wasn't sure and asked me to call back later. I did and was assured that they would be open. Sure enough, I drove halfway across town on Memorial Day only to find the restaurant closed. As detailed in my review below, the food here is delicious (arguably the best Middle Eastern cuisine in the city), but Weissman needs to get his act together. Five stars for the food, one star for the inconsistent business hours and lack of consideration for customers. ______________________________________________ I propose a more accurate name for chef/restauranteur Andrew Weissman's counter-service Israeli joint: Moshe's Golden Plate of Hummus, Baba Ghanoush, Labneh, Spicy Carrots, Couscous, Roasted Broccoli & Cauliflower Florets, and Myriad Other Delights (or "MGPHBGLSCCRBCFMOD," if I might suggest a catchy acronym.). The titular falafel is great, but it's not the focus at a place renown for its spreads, salads, pita, and shawarma. I've heard Moshe's compared to fast-casual chains such as Freebird's World Burrito and Chipotle, but that's like comparing a diamond-studded Audemars Piguet wristwatch to a tobacco-scented Montgomery Ward alarm clock from Goodwill. Yes, Moshe's is a counter-service restaurant, but Chef Weissman applies the same unwavering culinary standards that have earned him so much acclaim at Le Reve, Osteria Il Sogno, and Signature. The ingredients are sourced locally, everything is made in house, and the staff take pride in what they serve. Having never visited the Middle East, I am unqualified to comment on the authenticity of the falafel served here, but it ranks among the best in San Antonio. In the wrong hands, falafel can easily become the Middle Eastern equivalent of an overcooked hushpuppy: dry, dense, barely palatable. The falafel at Moshe's, however, is outstanding: crunchy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and chock full of fresh herbs (cilantro, mint, cardamom, cumin), garlic, and tahini. Even better is the spicy option, which adds housemade harissa (a Maghrebi hot chili pepper paste) and fresh red chili peppers to the mix. As mentioned in my silly introduction, the falafel at Moshe's plays second fiddle to the restaurant's star attraction: the dozen or so tantalizing salads, spreads, and condiments displayed prominently behind a sneeze guard at the counter. On a recent visit, the woman on duty remembered my hearty appetite from a previous binge and loaded my plate to the brim with roughly three pounds of victuals. I ordered a za'atar-spiked pita for a nominal upcharge and used it as a vessel for the hummus, baba ghanoush, and labneh. Moshe's was exclusively vegetarian until recently when Weissman introduced shawarma to the menu. As much as I enjoy the shawarma elsewhere in town (Pasha, Jerusalem Grill, Turquoise Grill), the beef/lamb mixture at Moshe's reigns supreme. Shawarma -- a Levantine meat preparation cooked on a rotisserie --  is typically shaved thin, but Moshe's cuts theirs an inch thick and two inches wide, giving it the appearance of a pan-seared sausage patty. The meat is juicy and spiced liberally with cumin, allspice, and turmeric. A dollop of harissa (one of several items from the condiment station) adds a smoky, spicy kick to the meat. Many ethnic restaurants offer uninspired store-bought desserts merely to placate Western expectations, but the homemade chocolate chunk cookies, brownies, and halwa on display near the cash register at Moshe's are worth the extra calories. Chocoholics will appreciate the brownies, which are moist, dense, and undoubtedly made with lots of high-quality cacao. My favorite is a Middle Eastern delicacy called halwa (or "halva" depending on region), a sweet confection made from tahini, brown sugar, vanilla beans, and pistachios. It's a light, savory treat with a crumbly texture similar to baked meringue. If your Buddha belly is too distended with shawarma, pita, and vegetables, then bring the desserts home for later. Highly recommended! I had even more to say but once again fell victim to Yelp's arbitrary character limit. Bah!

I love Moshe's! Absolutely one of my favorite places to go eat lunch. Everyone is so friendly and the food is outstanding! Everything is always fresh and the atmosphere feels homey

I'm not a religious person (my skin sizzles when I touch a crucifix), but a lunch at Moshe's Golden Falafel is like a religious experience for me. According to the Torah, the name Moshe (or "Moses") comes from the Hebrew verb meaning "to pull out/draw out," so perhaps what I experience at Moshe's is indeed religious. The fiber-rich veggies and spicy harissa "draw out" the baddies from my stomach, purifying me from within! A very enthusiastic five stars!
