If you’re looking for a true small-town bar experience in Burwell, Nebraska, Northside Bar & Grill is the place locals gather. We’ve been stopping here for years when traveling through the area, especially when visiting Calamus Lake, and it always delivers solid food and a friendly crowd. The place feels like a local institution — cowboys, farmers, and locals catching up on the weather while younger folks filter in later for the nightlife. Food-wise, you can’t go wrong with the tater tots or cheese curds, which are always perfectly fried and consistent. I’ve also had great meals here like the popper burger, patty melt, and the chicken fried steak fritter, which has an excellent crispy crust without drying out the meat. The décor leans fully into rodeo and cowboy culture, which fits Burwell perfectly, especially if you’re in town around rodeo season. Service is fast, portions are generous, and it’s exactly the kind of relaxed place travelers hope to find in a Nebraska ranching town.
