We had an amazing experience at Oishi Restaurant! We tried their Oishi fried rice, prawn katsu, Oishi fries, and taro bubble tea — everything was absolutely delicious. The fried rice was full of flavor and perfectly cooked, the prawn katsu was crispy and tasty, and the Oishi fries were a real treat. The taro bubble tea was sweet and refreshing, making it the perfect finish to our meal. Highly recommend this place — we’ll definitely be coming back! Preamble I'm writing this review after being prompted to by the proprietress; not because she asked, but because she reminded me. It's long overdue after I've gone there 2 or 3 times a month since last November. You see, around September or October I made a commitment to try more takeaway places on Portswood high street (to branch out from my ol' reliable of Charcoal Grill. I tried Sam's Chicken, Pepe's Piri Piri, Oriental, Kitchen Kingdom and Fu House. They were all adequate, not bad, but then I tried Oishii. Food I am biased because I freaking love stir-fry noodles. At time of writing there are 9 standardised stir-fry box items on the menu. I have tried 6 of them; I have yet to try the Sweet Chilli, Teriyaki or Tofu boxes, and I haven't tried the "make your own" option. I don't see myself trying them any time soon, because the Black Box is everything I need in my life. There are 1 star reviews here by people who tried menu items that weren't stir-fry boxes - very telling. Hey, I just opened my groupchat and searched for "oishii". 15 mentions by yours truly. Guess how many times I said "I love you" in that same group chat? 2, both quoting lines from films. Oishii is literally 7.5x better than love, according to my irrefutable maths. My friends are probably getting sick of me telling them to try Oishii next time they're in Portswood. Google says it's a Japanese restaurant, but to me the stir-fry noodles bear a closer resemblance to chow mein dishes. The thing is, I don't care. I still come home with my Oishii box yelling "I got freaking NOODLES" at my housemates as I enter the kitchen to heat my bowl before dishing up. Service Staff are receptive to feedback, and over the course of my repeated visits we've become somewhat friendly/chatty. Their card reader sometimes experiences tech issues; I do not care, I endure for my noodles. If you are working on a critically tight schedule, consider showing up with cash (just in case). Staff are conscientious about food waste and will try to offload rather than bin orders which have to be redone to specification. Atmosphere I give the atmosphere 3 stars. This isn't a bad thing, I just see it as a neutral score. I'm not there for ambience or entertainment, I'm there for noodles. Epilogue If you're reading this and thinking "I should try Oishii", good. Do it. If you're thinking, "I should order Oishii by deliveroo/just eats", stop. Look at your reflection. Ask yourself whether you want to enable a silicon valley ponzi scheme which gained economic viability by burning venture capital to operate below-cost until all their competitors went out of business. Go take a walk outside, the movement helps prevent blood clots and you may spot the elusive "Portswood Crawler". If you have impaired mobility, POTS, crippling agoraphobia or some other issue which would impede ordering noodles in person, disregard everything past the first sentence of this section. Meal type: Dinner Price per person: £1–10 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 3 Vegetarian options: I will edit to add to this after eventually trying their teriyaki/tofu boxes Dietary restrictions: I have no idea
