Just had the most unreal experience with our family of 4. When the food was served in three stages for 4 persons I was told that they had run out of fries but I would get them soon... So I started cutting my steak and it was well done instead of medium... the fries were oily and clearly overcooked (crisp through and through...). I told the waitress that the food was overcooked. No response. Went to pay and said again that meat was overcooked and fries were oily and overcooked... response: Yes fries are cooked in oil!!! Got to the door and made a remark about the terrible food and who shows up...the waitress telling me that 'the locals here' like the food. Great job from the chef and the waitress... Food: 1 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 1 Price per person: $30–40

It was getting dark on our way in to Otago and so we decided to stop off at Carnegies for dinner. The place only had two other guests but we took a table and were very pleased we did. Friendly service, nice dishes from a simple menu in a nice building We do recommend to others passing through Fairlie who want more than a pie Price per person: NZ$70–80 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Recommended dishes: Pizza

Despite the good reviews, our experience at Carnegies Restaurant and Bar was underwhelming. We intended to order the lamb rack, but they only had lamb chops (at the same price), steak, and pineapple and ham pizza. The staff, however, were friendly and welcoming, which is why I'm giving three stars. The lamb chops and steak were overcooked, dry, and chewy. I ordered fries and coleslaw with my steak, but they served baked vegetables instead. The food took an hour to arrive, so we didn't bother complaining. The restaurant is kid-friendly, offering coloring and card games. I hope this was just an off day for them, as our experience didn't match the positive reviews. The staff's friendliness was the highlight of our visit. Food: 2 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Service: Dine in Meal type: Dinner Price per person: $40–50
