As you …Hello Our primary duty of care is to our staff and guests, which is why we took the decision (unprecedented in eleven years) to close the bar early yesterday. As you know, there were a very large number of people in the beer garden (well over 100 at one stage), over and above what would be normal on a sunny day, and whom we were not expecting. While we always prepare for busy days, it isn’t easy to cope with very large groups without prior warning; we eventually ran out of glasses, ice, fruit, fridge stock, (and staff), all of which we could have allowed for had we had advance warning. This is not something we particularly wanted to do, obviously, but many guests in the party were beginning to exhibit behaviours which are not compatible with the way we operate our business, (something I witnessed first hand when collecting glasses outside), so we felt the best thing to do for the wellbeing of our staff, our Licensing Objectives, as well as the safety of other guests, was to close the bar early. Closing the bar and refusing service can be two sides of the same coin; we chose the former so we didn’t have to do the latter, in this case… I’m sorry if you feel this was unnecessary, or that someone was rude to you; on reflection, we still believe we made the right call, given many of our team were back in first thing this morning for another busy day….
