I’ve never been here but Jeanette walls (author of The Glass Castle) mentions the Owl Club in her extraordinary memoir. I leafed through the book while browsing in Chapters in Mississauga after my morning of working at the woodbine backstretch. Sat the whole damn day at Chapters.couldn’t put the book down. Closed the store at 8 pm. Once you start reading, it’s just not possible to put down. Every page will force you to read the next page ( or adventure) because honestly, you never know if these kids are going to come out alive or at least in one piece. If after reading the book, tell a friend just one story: father plucking stones out of the narrators face after flying out of the backseat of a beat up old car and rolling on the ground because the door didn’t shut properly or wasn’t completely closed. You can’t make this stuff up!! You won’t believe it. Aint no way this is a real family with real life stories happening to real people but it is. It really is. I thought I had an eventful childhood. It does not compare to Jeanette’s childhood. Read it !!!

I would like to give the Owl Club Casino & Restaurant a big shout out. Your generosity toward my family today was appreciated more than words can ever express. This establishment so graciously provided a luncheon for my family following the burial of my father. My parent's Pat and LeRoy Coy moved to Battle Mountain in 1999, just shortly after the death of my grandparents Adam and Geneva Welch. This generosity just goes to show how small towns really do come together with love and support when community members are in need. THANK YOU,THANK YOU.
