You don’t want to skip mint with dark choc chips
One of the quintessential experiences in Belgium is to try a liege waffle. Luckily I was able to do this on my first day in Oyya, a dessert shop in Bruges selling ice cream and waffles. Liege waffles are known to be made of a thicker batter resulting from dough using yeast in comparison to the Brussels waffle (of American breakfast fame). Furthermore a traditional Liege waffle has pearl sugar on top so that when it cooks, the waffles impart a crispness to its surface and when you bite into it, it's already sweet. Hence for me there is no need to make it even sweeter, though there is an option to add toppings like strawberries, whipped cream, Nutella and speculoos ("cookie butter"). For €2.50 I was able to get a plain waffle. Simple yet still good. The waffle was still quite warm to the touch. Though on a later visit when my dad bought a waffle with whipped cream the waffle had to be rewarmed on the waffle maker. A line can form in front of the store yet it goes by quickly, less than 5 minutes. However the line is shorter than Chez Albert, one of Bruges' well-loved spots for waffles. Though they sell gelato it doesn't seem to pass the gelato test with the gelato itself being piled up high like pillows. Besides the waffle itself is already sweet as is, no need to add to my daily sugar intake!

Yummy... I like to keep my reviews simple and to the point and this place does the same. Nothing too crazy or out there. (Flavors being the exception) There is ice cream, frozen yogurt and waffles! That's it, no crazy colors to catch your eyes or loud music to draw your ear. Just simple great tasting ice cream or frozen yogurt on a vessel of your choosing and done right. Speculoos (spiced shortcrust biscuit) is amazing, the (rum-rozijn) rum and raisin will get you drunk from just the raisins alone, but a nice pairing against a warm freshly made waffle. Thank you Oyya for keeping it simple, you certainly got my attention.
