Hard noodle (not boiled). Sesame noodle with tiny sesame sauce.

Watching my mom’s house in Irvine for a few days, I decided to get some quick food nearby. Wound up in this bizarre (to me) Asian place called Popcorn Chicken. While I was sitting there eating tasty fried pumpkin pieces out of a paper bag, looking up at some other options that I passed by this round -- such as fried pork intestine and pig’s blood cake (!!) -- I got transported back like 20 years ago to a classroom in Irvine as a kid. I recalled myself sitting next to this little girl, and she’s complaining out loud about how “Irvine is so borrrrrring.” The teacher hears, turns to her and says, calmly, “*You’re* boring.” Damnnnn! I think this memory came up because I never settled my thoughts on the situation. Back then I had a hazy, conflicting feeling of agreeing with both the girl and my teacher. But only now did I realize the teacher is actually 100% right. Irvine definitely doesn’t have what SF or NYC or Paris or [fill in glamour city] has, but in the end it has just what you make of it. My teacher’s point -- what I think he was saying oh-so-subtly to this brat girl next to me and to the rest of us part-brats -- is that being bored is one’s own fault, not a city’s. (For instance, I bet you a Taiwanese kid could be bored with this little restaurant, whereas for me it’s freakin’ crazy exciting!) Anyway, I’m happy Irvine has been mixing things up a bit lately, but I’m even happier that this experience helped me to finally get the teacher’s lesson, albeit a couple decades delayed. :) — at Popcorn Chicken.
