We were driving along Highway 101, hundreds of miles from home, and decided to stop by Post Ranch Inn because we were considering staying there next week. As American Express Centurion members, this property was highly recommended to us by the Centurion concierge, so we were excited to see it before making our reservation. Unfortunately, our first impression was extremely disappointing. Upon arriving, we were stopped at the entrance by what appeared to be a groundskeeper who was acting as the security guard. We politely explained that we were interested in booking a stay for the following week and simply wanted to take a quick look at the property before making our decision. We were immediately told that we could not enter without a reservation. I then asked if he could contact a manager and let them know that we were American Express Centurion members who had specifically come to see the resort because it had been recommended to us. We were told that the manager would come down to speak with us. We waited, but no one ever showed up. After waiting for some time, we eventually left. Luxury hospitality begins long before check-in. It starts with how potential guests are welcomed. We were not asking for complimentary services or special treatment—only the opportunity to briefly view a property we were seriously considering booking. Instead, we felt dismissed and ignored. The complete lack of communication and the failure of any manager to come speak with us was extremely unprofessional and left us questioning whether this is the level of hospitality guests should expect from a property with such an outstanding reputation. Sadly, because of this experience, we chose to look elsewhere for our stay.

Our Director of Guest Relations was on his way down the hill when he learned you were hoping to speak with him. Unfortunately, you had left before he arrived and we’re sorry that we missed the chance to connect with you. In respecting the privacy of those staying with us, unscheduled property tours are typically not available. It sounds as though our team member was trying to accommodate your request by reaching out to a manager, though in hindsight, we should have communicated more clearly that a walk-in tour would likely not be possible. We regret that this resulted in a disappointing first impression, particularly as you were considering a stay with us. Should your travels bring you back to Big Sur, we hope you might reconsider and allow us the opportunity to welcome you as our guest. In the spirit of hospitality, Tim LeeGeneral Manager
