We visited as a group of four and had a really lovely evening. Joanna looked after us and, despite working on her own in the restaurant, she handled everything effortlessly. She was attentive, calm, and professional even while clearly very busy. The food was also excellent and has improved a lot since our last visit was- really enjoyable. However, one aspect of the evening was disappointing. I wanted to tip Joanna by offering to buy her a glass of wine as a small gesture of appreciation. This was refused by the manager, who said that he prefers to handle such things and that the team are only allowed non-alcoholic drinks. When I suggested in that case perhaps he could treat her to a bottle of wine instead, he responded sarcastically that she would have to leave her job which felt unnecessary and quite undermining. Rather than appreciating his team member’s hard work, the response came across as dismissive, as though she was “just doing her job.” It was otherwise a great evening with very good food and service, but it’s a shame that such a small moment of appreciation couldn’t simply be acknowledged and handled more positively. I’m giving it 3 stars because the dining area looked dead. So I can’t really review the food. Atmospheres- wish I could give it 0. Dark and no life to it and no one was eating near the bar area either. Reception said it closes at 9. He was a bit gruff and uninterested. He should get another job. Acts like one of those who works in the cloakroom - fed up and wanted life to end kinda guy. Shame. This is the restaurant in Novotel Manchester West
