Would not recommend. This review has nothing to do with the kitchen being closed and everything to do with the appalling attitude and lack of basic courtesy shown by staff. We have visited The Red Lion before during previous trips and always had a pleasant experience, which makes this visit even more disappointing. We were a group of six with three dogs after a long day of hiking. As responsible dog owners, we immediately made our way to the outdoor area rather than sitting inside, as we are conscious that not everyone wants to be around dogs. One of our dogs is a puppy in training, another is an older, well-behaved dog, and the third is a rescue dog who is reactive but actively undergoing training and was under control throughout our visit. As we are not local to the area, we were unaware that food service finished at 8pm. We arrived at approximately 8:04pm and some members of our group went to the bar to order drinks and ask whether food was still available. Had staff simply and politely explained that the kitchen had just closed, there would have been absolutely no issue whatsoever. Instead, they were met with a level of attitude that immediately made us feel unwelcome. We accepted that food was no longer being served, ordered drinks, and decided we would finish them before heading elsewhere to eat. Problem solved—or so we thought. While seated outside, a member of staff entered the area. One of the dogs noticed her and barked. The dog was immediately corrected, and we smiled apologetically towards her. Rather than responding with even the most basic professionalism or understanding, she shook her head and gave our entire group a dirty look. What made this so unpleasant was the obvious disdain and judgement directed towards us throughout our visit. We were polite from the moment we arrived, respectful of other customers, and completely understanding about the food situation. Yet we were treated as though we were an inconvenience simply for being there. The hospitality industry is built on customer service, and there was a complete absence of it here. A polite explanation costs nothing. Basic manners cost nothing. Treating customers with respect costs nothing. Instead, we experienced rudeness, dismissive behaviour, and an atmosphere that made it very clear our presence was not appreciated. We are all adults in our twenties and would never dream of treating another person in the way we were treated, let alone paying customers. The closed kitchen was not the problem. The staff’s attitude was. A real shame considering our previous visits had been enjoyable, but after this experience we will not be returning. Service: 1

Friendly staff and room was clean and tidy. However, we wouldn’t stay at the Red Lion again because of the very restricted breakfast. Breakfast only available from 8:30am and the only food options were a fry up, porridge or toast. No cereal, yogurt or fruit available. We gave their breakfast a miss and went for an earlier breakfast at a local cafe. At £115/night with a very limited breakfast it was overpriced. Service: 4
