I had my first experience with Ribs Hickory Pit BBQ last Thursday evening about 8:15 pm when picking up a pulled pork sandwich & side to go. I was very disappointed on opening the foil to find an excess of fat, fatty skin & tough pork. The bread which is supposed to be a special type of hoagie roll was nothing special & soggy by the time I got my sandwich home 5 minutes later. The sauce was rather mild & not very flavorful in my opinion so I mixed in some bottled I had in my fridge, after picking through the meat after removing 1/3 of the fatty & tough parts, and putting on my own toasted baguette bread. Then I tried the Mac & cheese, supposedly made in house, that was equally poor in flavor, tasting no real cheese flavor at all. I ate half & threw the rest in the garbage disposal. I lived in Texas for 40 years, and know my BBQ, and am new to the East Mountain area, and would love to support my local restaurants, and had hoped for a delicious BBQ experience where I could go back regularly & enjoy. I understand the place was bought out after original owners moved on, but in my opinion, loving good BBQ, with option for a sauce with a bit of spice, as after all we are in New Mexico, with spice & green/red chili the norm, the standards need to be ratcheted up significantly for me to try their food again. I did call & discuss my experience with the manager, Chad, who patiently listened to my disappointed critique & offered a credit on my next opportunity to stop by, which I appreciated very much. I have to say in searching out the local BBQ close to home, I am taking the time to drive on my way home to Powdrell's on Central, which I also tried recently trying to appeal to my BBQ craving, and the pulled pork sandwich was tender, lean and there were two choices of sauce, with the spicy appealing to me, on a good bun that stood up to being wrapped for take out, and rather good cheesy Mac. As well, the new Acapulco taco place next door to Ribs has a good carne adovado burrito if I need a close to home spice fix. Perhaps I got the end of the evening service with my take out order, but I feel that the overall flavor & attention to good BBQ needs to be stepped up to the accolades described on their website. - Disappointed East Mtn resident
