Passing through Jacksonville and had a very good experience! Everyone super friendly and helpful! Owner told us they have changed the name to Mi Pueblo #3! It is a mixture of Brasilian/Hispanic supermarket and they have A LOT!  A nice meat department with delicious and fresh cuts of meat. Very clean and comfortable atmosphere.  In addition to the supermarket, a dinning area with buffet service or a la carte. They also have "to go" ao kilo. Buffet was varied and food was fresh. We live about 2 hours away and will be coming back often.

The following review was published under my byline in the Florida Times-Union on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2015. This is an original, unabridged version of that review. If you're a serious meataholic, and by that I mean the kind of person who get their kicks putting trendy bacon worshippers to shame, you've likely crossed paths with a Brazilian churrascaria. And if you survived its seemingly endless rounds of skewered cuts delivered tableside by serious-minded, uniformed waiters, chances are you also quickly parted ways with your appetite and a large chunk of your wallet. While not quite a handful of these pricey meat emporiums serve First Coast diners today, one upstart Brazilian eatery in Mandarin proves there's still a refuge for the budget-minded carnivore. Rodeo Brazilian Grill debuted in June at the Mandarin Outback Plaza off San Jose Boulevard, just south of Old St. Augustine Road. Co-owner Mateus Barroso, who hails from Brazil's Minas Gerais state, operates the restaurant with a partner six days a week for lunch and dinner. Rodeo's smallish dining room accommodates just seven tables, four booths, a buffet line and a barbecue grill along the back wall. Its menu is similarly small with a collection of appetizers, a la carte meat and fish entrees and pizzas. You can also browse the buffet and sample barbecue by the pound. Mateus said the variety of meat offerings soon would grow, to four for lunch and 13 for dinner. My friend and I dropped in for an early dinner on a recent Thursday night. While the crowd was on the sparse side when we arrived, traffic picked up closer to 7:30, as a soccer match came to life on the ceiling-mounted flat screen. As a bucket of beers landed on the table behind us, a half-dozen young men surrounded it, all eyes on the screen above. While it wasn't hard to decipher the menu, we had to scale a small language barrier to communicate with our server, who was obviously much more comfortable speaking Portuguese with us. Some strategic pointing and smiling got us through. We dug in with two starters. The Coxinha, or chicken croquettes ($6.99 for eight pieces), were golden hushpuppy imposters concealing tasty shredded chicken. They were seasoned well and easy to love, in spite of the conspicuous lack of dipping sauces. The Pasteles de Queijo, or pastry envelopes with cheese ($4.99 for four pieces), were empanada-like turnovers that lacked the ooey-gooey cheesiness we hoped to expose at every bite. Instead they were dry and more air-filled than we would have liked. A la carte plates, which feature grilled meats from the barbecue grill with your choice of four side items, are a good deal here ($11-17). My friend chose the Frango Grelhado, or grilled chicken plate ($10.99). She got two well-dressed boneless breasts with generous sides of white rice, pinto beans, a crumbly side of yucca flour and an iceberg mix salad with "vinaigrette," known in Brazilian dining nomenclature as pico de gallo. My entrée, the Pizza Portuguesa ($14.99), was a 12-inch pie very light on red sauce with smoked pork sausage, hard-boiled egg, olive, onion and mozzarella over a very thin, light crust. So thin, in fact, it was a hard-fought struggle to separate pan from pizza. Next time, I'll ask the server to grease my pan. In spite of the "separation anxiety," it was a light, tasty something different in the flavor department. Rodeo offers four homemade desserts, including fruit and cheese mousse creations and chocolate fudge. I opted for the Pudim de Leite, or flan ($2.99), a thick and rich yet petite custard wedge with a caramel complexion from its light syrup. It was an indulgent joy. If you're a discriminating cocktail sipper or craft-beer drinker, Rodeo's limited beer and wine offerings won't wow you. Otherwise, you'll find plenty of bottled sodas and juices, regular and sparkling waters, not to mention cans of guaraná soda. Despite being flagged for a few procedural issues during our visit, Rodeo Brazilian Grill still is a promising and less wallet-intimidating alternative to the churrascarias.
