This is my favorite place to eat either a healthy meal or a healthy smoothie/dessert. I can't say enough good things about Roots. It feels like community! Live events such as music or poetry mics, an art studio and much more. Whenever I eat here I leave feeling energized. Check out the smoothies, especially Golden Goddess and the freshly made oatmeal. Everything is made with so much care. Definitely not a fast food place but the goods here are well worth the small wait to prepare them. If I could I would give Roots 10 stars! Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

The food and atmosphere are amazing. The location is great. I've eaten from there a few times already. I have 2 minor issues with Roots. First, clean the tables after each customer. Twice I've noticed crumbs on the table. Second, don't place the utensils on the table when serving. Place them on the napkin. Other than those 2 issues, all is well. I'd eat there again. Meal type: Lunch Price per person: $20–30

I really wanted to like Roots Café in Closter—the concept is great and it fits the setting so well—but the execution just isn’t there. Service was disappointing from the start. The person at the counter didn’t look up from cutting coupons while we were standing there ready to order, which set the tone in a not-great way. The atmosphere was also surprisingly loud and chaotic, which felt out of sync with what should be a more relaxed local spot. Food-wise, it unfortunately didn’t improve. The hot chai had hard bits in it, making it unpleasant to drink, and the nori wrap was tough and essentially inedible. There’s a good idea here, but it needs serious attention to both service and quality to live up to its potential.
