So you're headed to the Lake District, and you want to know where to stay. Simple, really: Stay at Rothay Manor in Ambleside. First, it's the perfect location, right in the center of the District, in a charming town that's just the right size (Windermere and Keswick being a bit too big, and Grasmere maybe too sleepy). Great walking trails originate at the hotel, and the Windermere lakefront park is a short walk away. And Ambleside centre is just a 10 minute stroll. Beyond location, Rothay Manor combines all the charm of an old English inn with important upgrades: modern bathrooms with stand-up rain shower, high-quality beds and linens, and walk-out balconies. And most of all, do dine here: they recently hired Chef Aaron, formerly of the Samling, who cooked us the best meal of our trip (which included a magnificent private chef, dinner at Forest Side, and at Oak in Bath). All this at frankly affordable pricing. Bravo to the new ownership--you're doing something special here. And to the great staff, especially Sam and Joe who were such fun and took great care of our family. We hope to come back soon. Besides the beautiful grounds and comfy rooms, I was most impressed by their restaurant. The service, presentation and of course the food were perfect. One of the best hotel restaurants I’ve visited. If I visit the Lake District again, I’ll stay at Rothay. Rooms: 5 Service: 5 Location: 5
