One of the greats of Brisbane. The food, service and atmosphere at Ruby My Dear are all immaculate. My partner and I have been twice and will be back. Highly recommend the eggplant skewers and dumplings. They're some of the most the most mouthwatering dishes in living memory. Special mention has to go to the vibe here. The lights are low and the tables feel intimate, even when the restaurant is full. The perfect date spot for a couple, but equally suited to a large table for a celebration. I was extremely disappointed with my experience ordering the carbonara from Ruby My Dear at Night Feast. I paid $22, and the portion was incredibly small there was barely enough pasta to cover the bottom of the container. The presentation made it even worse. It was served in a large takeaway box that was almost empty, which made the portion look completely inadequate for the price. For $22, I expected a proper meal, not just a few bites of pasta. What is most disappointing is that Ruby My Dear is also a restaurant I may have considered visiting for a nice or special dinner. However, after seeing the lack of care shown in the portion, presentation and overall customer experience, I have completely lost interest in visiting the restaurant. Experiences like this leave the impression that the business is more focused on charging premium prices than making sure customers feel valued and receive good-quality service. Beautiful atmosphere, but the food needs more balance We visited Ruby, my dear and ordered the chicken skin, vegetable dumplings, kingfish aburi, snapper namero with nori crisp, edamame, charred broccolini, and coal roast chicken. The standout dish of the evening was the snapper namero with nori crisp. The flavours were well balanced, with the delicate fish pairing beautifully with the savoury crunch of the nori. This was the only dish that truly stood out and left a lasting impression. The kingfish aburi, served with the skin on, was unfortunately not to our preference. Skin-on can be a wonderful preparation when the skin is properly rendered and enhances the fish, but in this case, the stronger flavour from the skin dominated the delicate sweetness of the kingfish. Removing the skin or preparing it differently may have allowed the natural flavour of the fish to come through more clearly. The coal roast chicken was cooked well, but the seasoning was noticeably too salty, which masked the natural flavour of the chicken. The chicken skin, charred broccolini and vegetable dumplings were acceptable but did not leave a strong impression, while the edamame was pleasant but fairly standard. Where Ruby, my dear truly excels is its atmosphere. As a vinyl bar, it has a unique charm, the carefully curated music, live jazz sessions, and relaxed yet sophisticated setting create an experience that encourages you to slow down, enjoy a drink, and settle into the evening. It is a beautiful space for conversation and unwinding. Overall, Ruby, my dear has a lot of potential. The ambience, music, and concept are thoughtfully executed, but the food needs more balance and finesse to match the strength of the venue. With more attention to seasoning and letting the quality of ingredients speak for themselves, this could become a much stronger dining experience.
