Pedimos papas y batatas fritas, y unos mac and cheese que estaban increíbles.

Old crusty and highly historic. Netflix bought it and is going to tear it down. Atmosphere: 5

INTRO: Hands down my favorite of all the 1933 Group bars, if I am rating them for the décor.  So, if you have never been here, or to a 1933 Group property... please sit tight for a minute and allow me to paint the canvas. Picture this... you are on a street. Confirmed city? Los Angeles, California. You spy a watering hole and commit to stepping from the street into it. As you do you spy the name illuminated overhead. The place goes by the name Sassafras Saloon. Now, buckle up because the design team is about to wow you. DECOR: As you enter there is an overwhelming feeling that you haven't entered yet and that is because within the voluminous space the designers of this 1933 Group gem have created a courtyard to your left, complete with bench seating and epiphytic Spanish moss hanging downward as if southern oaks were growing right up from the sands beneath the L.A. pavement and then, still indoors (trust me) there is a Spanish architectural façade of a New Orleans style, complete with doorways, windows and shutters. In front of you there is a bar stretching toward the back of the room complete with pedestal bar stools of old with pendant lights fed down from the textured tin-panel stylings found applied to their ceiling. I have noted that the bar itself is enough to easily accommodate the usual Los Angeles crowd on a Saturday night. Now I won't spoil the additional treasury of wonder that this place skillfully promotes but, just don't show up looking for some Euro Scan-Design, latest and greatest of trendy L.A. This place is far from a prefab simple-dollar IKEA-esque pop-up bar. Think Cracker Barrel décor but, with a naturally and sensibly decorated fashion fused to it. So, rather than looking like some consignment shop boasting the kitschiest tchotchkes from 15 dead grandmothers, you will find a business tastefully arranged ornamentation which includes chandeliers and old timey photos. Hanging plants and classic Bentwood chairs. The rest of the business - and there is more to explore, I assure you, is amazing. Even Justin Wilson would approve... "I guarantee!" BACKGROUND: Now, let's be clear...I am not a drinker nor have I been for decades but, I still head out to find the hidden diamonds in the mine I call the City of Angels and when I do, I am quick to don the designated driver hat and haul those in my inner circle from watering hole to watering hole. The thing that separates a good night from a bad one is doing your homework solo prior to offering to act as your group's transportation captain. SERVICE: I can't recall when I was here last, with speed bumps such as my deployments, a global pandemic and that thing called life that can change your plans in a heartbeat but, the last two times I was here I brought local friends and a a buddy from Oahu.  Both nights a great time simply happened due to the great service we received by the amazing bar staff. Personal note: The attractive young lady who tended bar actually recalled my order (ginger beer) as I approached, and keep in mind it had been a couple of weeks between visits and maybe a couple of months prior to that was when I experienced my first few visits (and I never sit at the bar). So, that is the level of game you are dealing with here.  My friends all said their libations were drinks and not a watered down glasses of disappointment. Which is always good to know.  Feedback like that helps me plan where the tourist retro Hollywood haunt booze-train stops for a bit.  I will say that one night when I was doing my research and running solo, the bar was slammed packed due to a samba band having walked in off the street, complete with dancers... even THAT night I still didn't have a problem ordering. Now I will refrain from saying if they were properly staffed or not, because is was a minute ago and the ol' memory occasionally blends together some of the booze-train train stations but, they have always earned what I feel is a better than most gratuity. PARKING: I have always gotten lucky with street parking and I think the worst case scenario was I walked 3 blocks. NOTE: Like with any L.A. or any big city, checking the posted signs and the color of the curb should be as routine as locking your car. So I am not recommending you check, I am insisting. After all, why would you want to give your cash to the city when you could be giving it to your local barkeep? CURRENT NOTES: Well, I stopped by a few weeks ago and the location was boarded up but, I read here on Yelp that plans to reopen are just about upon us. So, fellow Sass fans hold tight and be patient for just a bit more... with any luck we might actually rub elbows at the bar one day. Cheers, Y'all... and thanks for reading along.
