Great service every time I stop here. The staff are always friendly and helpful, and the station is clean and well-maintained. The pumps work quickly, prices are competitive, and the shop has a good selection of snacks and drinks.

Frank saved my day – true kindness at Shell Bude (Bencoolen Rd) I had a bit of a “car situation” today with a rented Mercedes. Out of nowhere, the car started blinking with a “Rectify Tyre Pressure” warning, and three, then four, tyres lit up on the dashboard. Dramatic for someone who’s never dealt with tyre pressure before, as my own car back home is nowhere near fancy and has never told me anything other than “low on fuel”. I tried contacting the car rental since I had no clue on how to rectify those tires – or where? Having never had to deal with sommerhusgrund like that before. Unfortunately, that was a complete waste of time. The customer service immidiately said that I had to contact the emergency number. I explained that it was not am emergency just the car needing air in the tyres. But still they insisted on the emergency-number. The woman I was then transferred to tried to be helpful, but ended up making me feel small, stupid, and completely misunderstood. Despite explaining that the tyres weren’t flat or punctured – just low on pressure – she kept talking about replacing all four tyres (!) and that she didn’t Think she would be able to find someone right away and eventually told me I should just go to a petrol station but couldn’t actually tell me what to do once I got there. Utterly useless. Feeling frustrated and a little overwhelmed, I pulled into Shell on Bencoolen Road in Bude, hoping someone might be able to help. And this is where my faith in humanity was restored. First, a kind woman (whose name I sadly didn’t get) from the station walked out with me and listened to my (slightly desperate) explanation of the day. She agreed I hadn’t been treated fairly and said she’d fetch her colleague who might know more about this particular car. Enter Frank – a guy in his mid-20s who deserves a raise and a hug. Frank calmly looked up the car model on his phone, found the correct tyre pressure, and then filled all four tyres to the right level as I just stood by in awe. He didn’t make me feel stupid – quite the opposite. When I (a little teary) told him he’d completely saved my day, he just smiled and said, “Well I am glad to hear it. That is what we are here for.” (So British, so kind, so perfect.) Compare that to the chaos at the rental Car Company and the useless third-party tyre helpline they sent me to Thank you, Frank and the team at Shell Bude – you didn’t just help with tyre pressure, you proved that chivalry isn’t dead and that good people are out there
