The town is lovely and has a very interesting history attested in a nearby small museum. Staff were attentive and evidently trying their best, very tolerant and helpful and I don’t have a bad word to say about them. With that being said the food was dreadful, all frozen straight off a van. For breakfast I ordered avocado on toast and received a processed guacamole instead, understandable given food costs but not enjoyable, the poached eggs on top were an odd texture and I had an upset stomach for the next two days. The rooms were a good quality but expensive for what they are, with showers that could do with an update, also several party members had issues with rooms being overly cold or hot depending on location. I honestly can’t thank the staff enough but given my experience with the food I’m forced to rate the place one star.

Visited last week for a three course lunch. Service was excellent. Apologies for highlighting issues after the fact, but not keen on confrontation. Only complaints are around misleading menu descriptions. Ordered a cauliflower panna cotta for starter and the member of staff suggested ordering a side of sourdough bread. I was confused, but went along with their recommendation. Upon arrival it was obvious why bread was needed as it was not a panna cotta but a cold dip. Why do chefs do that? It's like when they say risotto but it's made with pearl barley or orzo. Stop appropriating food! Anyway, an £8 starter became a £12.50 one and the 4 small pieces of bread were not really enough to cope with the cold dip (which, because it wasn't a panna cotta would have tasted better warmed). It did taste alright though, it just wasn't what I thought I was ordering. Second minor misleading info was on a main dish which was mushroom bourguignon with buttered new potatoes and seasonal greens. Plural on the greens leads you to think there would be more than one variety of vegetable on offer, but it was just shredded Savoy cabbage. It was tasty, but just felt a little too pricey for what it was. And overall, that is what the experience felt like on reflection, compared to the excellent three course Sunday Lunch that we had a few days earlier at The Ship At Dunwich's sister pub, The Westleton Crown. That was tasty, good value and on point with their menu descriptions. Service: 5 Location: 5
