Homey spot with friendly waiters but unfortunately only 3.5 stars. Came to the restaurant mainly hoping to try one of NYC's "best sesame noodles." The rich history behind the restaurant was what drew me there, and the fact that their main dish was sesame noodles made it all the more promising. Here's what I got at the restaurant: 1. Cold Noodles with Sesame Sauce - Disappointing as the sesame flavour was not very strong and overall just tasted somewhat bland. The chilli sauce that they gave on the side made it taste much better but that pretty much takes away from the sesame flavour. - Overall not a terrible dish, it just did not live up to the hype. Noodles were wonderfully made and chewy, consistent quality with the following dish. 2. Braised Beef Noodles Soup - The star of the show. The beef was tender and wonderfully cooked. It was juicy, flavourful and basically came apart in your mouth. The broth was great and the meat really held onto a lot of the flavour. Only note would be that the broth felt a little too salty, but that's definitely a personal preference. - As previously mentioned the noodles were basically perfect and truly tied the dish together. 3. Wonton Soup - As a Hong Konger I had been missing the wonton soups back home. This dish really satisfied that craving and the wontons were clearly made with care and expertise. The skin was just the right thickness--relatively thin but still nice and chewy--and the filling tasted pretty authentic. - The soup was the only downside. I'm used to clearer broths back home but this wonton soup was served in a surprisingly dark broth, similar to the Braised Beef broth. Though the broth did not taste bad, its flavourful base was too overpowering and so a lighter broth (true to the HK style wonton soup) would have been preferred. Overall not a bad experience! The servers were friendly and efficient. The dishes weren't perfect but nonetheless still makes for a delicious, homey meal. Unfortunately the inconsistent food quality and somewhat pricey bill makes this spot less appealing. Yet, despite the disappointing experience with the sesame noodles, I can definitely still see myself coming back to try other dishes!

I wanted to love it.  I have been a fan since I first had Shorty Tang noodles at smorgasborg.  The family was so nice and the story was even better.  Grandfather was famous for this simple dish. Food sesame noodles.  The smorgasborg version was 5/5.   This was not the same dish I had fallen in love with years ago.  It was much more oily, a tad too thick and then noodles lacked depth of flavor.  This isn't to say they weren't good but they weren't life changing.   I ordered take out and the front staff seemed to be disorganized.  I walked in and ordered.  No one else came in while I was there.  The girl who took my order stood there and stared at me the whole time I waited.  Someone brought a brown bag to the front and she placed it to the side.  5 min later I asked how much longer it would be for my order and she said oh what was your order.  Grabbed the brown bag that had been waiting and handed it to me.  Odd. The to go container was amazingly great.  I loved the bamboo bowl!
