I received this dinner for two through the Verizon Up Reward Program. Our menu was preplanned by the restaurant and there were no options available to us. It was served family style and included two glasses of sparkling house wine and one small slice of apple tart. The Focaccia bread, butter and dipping sauce was delicious! My husband and I would have liked more than two small pieces each. The polenta chickpea fries with spice remoulade was outstanding! The salad was just ok; nothing to write home about. The sunflower seeds were a nice touch. The Ohio Grown Roasted Beets were horrendous! The beets themselves and the creme fraiche were fine, but they were covered in some kind of black, very unappealing, spice as well as crispy puffed rice that looked like maggots! The smashed potatoes and sautéed greens were just ok. I was served a Braised Short Rib which was very tender, but loaded with salt!!! Unfortunately, my husband wasn’t served a protein because he doesn’t eat meat. (Even though I noted his dietary restriction when I made the reservation.). So that was weird!!! We received one small slice of apple tart to share. The cream for my coffee was curdled. At 6:30 on a Friday evening, there were six tables occupied...two of them were Verizon Up Reward winners. Enough said.

Spice Kitchen + Bar is a happening spot on the Detroit Shoreway across from The Happy Dog. I was there recently for a friend's birthday brunch on a Sunday morning. The hostess was friendly and seated us quickly. The wait staff buzzed about and took drink orders. However, they were not as adept at noticing when coffee cups were empty for long periods of time. Though they hovered, they did not make a lot of effort to see if you needed a warm-up. Perhaps it was because of how busy the restaurant was at the time. The food at Spice is locally sourced and grown for a farm to table experience. I found the menu to offer diverse selections including a variety of savory and sweet options for brunch such as a traditional eggs/potatoes/meat breakfast, chicken and waffles, omelets, and eggs benedict. Overall my meal was quite tasty. I had their American breakfast with eggs over easy, fried potatoes, and sausage. I enjoyed it all, but I noticed the house-made sausage was very lean, so it has a more dry, crumbly texture while I prefer a more fatty bite of sausage. I would go to Spice again and see how the service is at another time during the week. Spice has a nice menu, good food, and fair service. Perhaps the next visit will showcase even more attentive waitstaff.
