Very unwelcoming to us with children. Food was beautiful can’t fault the roast dinner, service from the waitressing staff was great and polite, attitude from the owner was beyond ignorant. I rang to discuss and give an opportunity to rectify but was dismissed and unheard, no offer of a resolution yet did admit I was right in what she said. Rang twice this week to double check our booking was fine given there were several posts this week regarding staff issues. Reiterated we needed a high chair and had a pram. We were greeted with an attitude, advised table was upstairs and could not be accommodated downstairs with a pram. Yes I was told they could be re arranged but the pram could still not be accommodated so I’m unsure how that’s a resolution with a new born who needs a pram We made it upstairs, no WiFi available to enable use of a tablet to entertain the child yet available downstairs. Staff stepped over us navigating a pram and two children up the stairs instead of waiting. They have admitted the member of staff who took the booking didn’t pass on about a pram etc but no offer of help to accommodate and a family birthday lunch that took a lot of planning with a newborn and toddler left a mum in tears feeling so unwelcome and everyone just reluctant to return so we won’t be back. Small country pub has logistic issues of course, which is why I rang to check and double check. Tried to support a small pub in the current climate, drove a thirty mile trip to do so but with such an argumentative and dismissive attitude to resolve, we won’t be back and would discourage families with young children from going. The customer isn’t always right and business is difficult these days, sometimes things go wrong, sometimes staff are off or food isn’t good etc but a polite and welcoming attitude or a genuine apology goes a long way. I believe in leaving both the good and the bad reviews and would be writing a good one had this been a lovely family lunch. I won’t fault the food, I will fault the customer service and what it took to receive an apology yet no resolution. Food: 4 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 1 Price per person: £20–30

Thank you for taking the time to leave your review. I was the person who welcomed your party on arrival and, whilst I am sorry that you left feeling disappointed, I feel it is important to clarify a number of points where your account differs from what actually happened.Firstly, I fully accept that the information you gave when you called ahead regarding your request for a downstairs table and a highchair was not passed on by the member of staff who took the call. I apologised for this immediately when you arrived and again during our subsequent telephone conversation. I also explained that I would review our procedures to help ensure this did not happen again. When you arrived, I greeted you at the door as you were manoeuvring the pram through the entrance. As a 300-year-old Grade II listed pub made up of several interconnected rooms over different levels, we do have physical limitations that can sometimes make accessibility more challenging.Having realised the information had not been communicated, my immediate priority was to resolve the issue. I offered to rearrange tables so that your party could be seated downstairs, explaining that it would take a few minutes to do so. I also explained that accommodating the pram would be difficult because it occupied a similar amount of space to one of our four-person tables. I suggested that you first look at the upstairs snug, where you would have the room to yourselves, whilst making it clear that I was still happy to move tables downstairs if you preferred. Although you commented that you felt you had little choice but to go upstairs, the offer to rearrange seating downstairs was repeated and remained open. It is therefore not correct to say that no attempt was made to accommodate your request or offer a resolution.Regarding your comments about staff stepping over your party, our kitchen is located upstairs, meaning our team need to use the staircase to serve guests downstairs. At the time your party arrived, staff were carrying meals to another table. They did so politely, apologising and saying "excuse me" as they passed. Once your party was seated, I personally checked that everything was satisfactory and, when requested, retrieved a highchair. As you acknowledged in your own review, both the food and the service provided by my team were faultless. Throughout your visit, your party appeared relaxed, smiling and enjoying your meal. With regard to the Wi-Fi, unfortunately this is something largely outside of our control. Like many historic buildings with thick stone walls, signal strength can vary significantly between different areas of the building. Finally, I was saddened to read your comment that a member of your party left in tears feeling unwelcome. Neither I nor any member of my team witnessed anyone leaving distressed, either whilst settling the bill, leaving the pub or getting into your car. Had we believed that someone was so upset, we would, of course, have done everything we could to address it before you left.During our telephone conversation, I again apologised for the miscommunication and acknowledged that we had made an error in not passing on your request. I appreciate that our interaction was clearly perceived differently by you. However, I do not accept and cannot agree with the suggestion that I was rude, dismissive or argumentative, or that no apology or resolution was offered. Whilst I fully accept that we made a mistake with the telephone information, I believe it is important to distinguish that from the efforts made to resolve the situation once it came to light. We work incredibly hard to provide a warm and welcoming environment for all of our guests, including families, and I believe our many previous reviews are a fair reflection of the service and hospitality we strive to provide every day. I am sorry that you feel that your experience did not meet those expectations.SarahThe Stag Inn

We have been meaning to visit this amazing place for a couple of years now. We go to Green Acres Caravan Park nearby regularly and have been recommended the Stag Inn many times. We got talking to Dan who owns the Stag with his wife Sarah. Dan also the chef. He is a lovely guy who is clearly passionate about their business and the food he prepares. Dan and Sarah have put so much love into this place, it's comfortable, friendly and the styling and decor is right up our street. We ordered our food and we were treated to something very, very special. Hand on heart, the best food I've ever had. My wife had the Beetroot Rice Crackers and I had the Squid to start. Amazing! Just amazing. Then we had the Flat Iron Steak and the Sirloin Steak - both cooked on the Kasai bbq. This man really knows his stuff - the mains were absolutely fantastic. We finished off by sharing a Valharona Chocolate dessert. I'm still speechless to how special this all was. This was a treat we will never forget. Thank you Dan, thank you Sarah. What you guys have achieved here is wonderful. We cannot wait to come back, I wish we had come in sooner!
