A friend told me about Thaarakai, and since we were already in Essen for some shopping, we decided to drop by for lunch on a Saturday. The restaurant is located inside the newly opened Markthalle food court near Essen HBF, and I have to say, the place has a warm, calm atmosphere and feels very pleasant to sit in. The menu is still small, but thoughtfully chosen - focusing on the classic Northern Sri Lankan dishes many of us grew up with and miss abroad. We ordered the rice and chicken dish, and it was incredibly delicious. The portion was generous and very filling, exactly what you hope for when you crave proper Sri Lankan food. Even though rice was almost sold out when we arrived, they prepared a fresh portion for us, tailored to our preferred high spice level. They take spice seriously and adjust it to what you request, which is a big plus for those who enjoy real heat like we do. The food tasted genuinely home-cooked, full of flavor and authenticity. The staff were friendly, supportive, and genuinely welcoming - something we appreciated a lot. It’s not easy to find true Sri Lankan flavors around Essen, so we were really happy to discover this place. If you love authentic Sri Lankan cuisine or enjoy exploring Asian food, Thaarakai is definitely worth a visit. A memorable spot with real taste, hearty servings, and warm hospitality.
